Heroes walk among us and when we need them the most, there they are, ready to jump in without any fear for their own safety. And when we hear the brave human risks his life to save an animal, we dog lovers are even more grateful for that hero.

As a police officer for the Conway Police Department in Conway, AR, Officer Carson Howard protects and serves on a daily basis. But when a call about a house fire came over the radio, he went from just doing his job to becoming a hero in the space of seconds.

The department recognized his bravery on Twitter, writing, “Ofc. Carson Howard with Your CPD arrived at the scene of a house engulfed in flames & without regard for his own safety, he immediately ran into the burning home.”

Officer Howard’s bodycam captured the whole terrifying scene and its easy to see the brave man didn’t even hesitate to help the family and their dog.

A Hero Reacts

The body cam clip opens with Officer Howard steering onto the scene and leaping from his car. We run with him as he dashes for a home with hot burning flame pouring from the structure and into the sky. He doesn’t even break stride as he asks other first responders, “There’s still one?”

Once inside the burning house, Howard meets with smoky dimness and a sense of chaos as a man and woman frantically try to get their dog to safety. In tears, worried for her dog, we see the woman holding tight to her dog’s collar, but angling for an exit with Howard there to help. Following the woman and dog, the man pleads, “I got to get my dog out.”

We watch as Officer Howard corrals the three of them toward the front door and away from the side of the house where the fire rages. All four spill from the house and onto the safety of the front lawn, safe and sound. Happy to be out of the smoke and fire, the dog takes a lap, but hurries back to his upset mother’s arms as she cries, “Oh my god, my dog.”

Though their house was damaged and possessions were lost, the family was safe and together, their dog included. Without Officer Howard’s quick response, this story might have had a very different outcome, but thankfully heroes walk among us. And thanks to a bodycam, the world was able to witness Howard’s bravery.
