When a powerful earthquake sent walls cracking and buildings crashing to the ground, Lenny Ruiz Fernández had only moments to react. Fear and chaos surrounded her as the structure she called home began falling apart, but her thoughts turned to the life beside her that depended on her protection. Rather than focus only on her own safety, the 38-year-old animal advocate pulled her beloved dog, Salomón, close and covered him with her body. In those terrifying final moments, Lenny made an extraordinary sacrifice, choosing to protect her faithful companion with everything she had.

A devastating 7.4 magnitude earthquake struck western Colombia, collapsing buildings and claiming the lives of more than 281 people as rescuers searched through the destruction for survivors. Lenny was among those who lost their lives. Yet amid the heartbreak, rescuers discovered that her final act had saved the life of the dog she loved so deeply.
As the Ana Pilar building in the Cuarto de Legua neighborhood began shaking and crumbling, Lenny pulled Salomón close. With nowhere safe to escape, she shielded him from the falling rubble with her body. When rescuers eventually reached them beneath the debris, they found Salomón alive in Lenny’s arms. She had not survived.
Salomón Survives Because of Lenny’s Love
For Lenny’s grieving family, Salomón’s survival became a powerful reminder of the woman they loved. The frightened dog was reunited with them and began recovering alongside a family facing an unimaginable loss.

Lenny was more than a devoted dog mom. A lawyer and animal activist, she worked with the Pasto Animal Protection Board and dedicated herself to helping animals that could not speak for themselves. Her compassion was evident throughout her life, and in the final moments of that life, she protected Salomón with everything she had.
That bond remained present when family and friends gathered to say goodbye. Salomón attended Lenny’s funeral alongside her heartbroken loved ones. In an emotional tribute, the dog was placed on her casket, keeping him close to the person who had sacrificed her life to save his. Those attending wore white, honoring a wish Lenny had expressed while she was alive. Her love for animals was also reflected in another special request.
According to a Facebook post about the funeral, Lenny had asked mourners not to bring traditional floral arrangements. Instead, they were encouraged to donate dog food that could later be distributed to animals in need.
It was a fitting tribute to someone whose compassion extended far beyond her own pet. Even as friends and relatives gathered in grief, her final wishes ensured vulnerable animals would receive food and care.

Salomón now remains with Lenny’s family, surrounded by people who understand just how much he meant to her. His survival cannot erase their loss, but his presence carries a piece of the extraordinary bond the two shared.
In the chaos of a devastating earthquake, Lenny’s instinct was to protect a life she treasured. Her final embrace became an act of courage, compassion, and unconditional love that saved Salomón.
Rest in peace, Lenny Ruiz Fernández. Her devotion to animals lives on through the lives she touched, and through the dog she held safely until the very end.
