Most dog owners have no doubt that their pups would give their lives to save a loved one. This brave dog proved this to be true, dying a hero by sacrificing himself to save his family’s 8-month-old baby.
Pup Polo and baby Viviana were inside the apartment when mom Erika Poremski stepped outside to her car. But in those moments, flames engulfed the home. The frantic mother rushed toward the door to save her daughter, but the fire was already blazing.
“I tried to keep getting in,” Poremski told CBS News. “She was up the stairs, but the fire smoke was so heavy I couldn’t get past it.”
As she struggled to force her way into the home, her face and hands got scorched.
Firefighters arrived on the scene, and once inside, found baby Viviana alive–because Polo was covering her with his body. Tragically, the dog did not survive the disaster.
Little Viviana suffered burns on her arms and side, and her condition is still considered serious. However, she is alive and has hope because Polo made the ultimate sacrifice.
Polo’s bond with his family was so close, in fact, that he may have had a premonition that something bad was about to happen.
“That day of the fire, he was acting weird all day. I even told a friend I was going to take him to vet. He was crying and following me around and had a seizure from anxiety,” Poremski said in the CBS story.
The brave pup Polo will be sorely missed by his loved ones.
“He was my first baby before Viv. He was like my child. He followed us everywhere,” she told CBS.
We wish the absolute best for Erika and Viviana during this trying time. And to sweet Polo, rest in peace: you are truly a hero who will never be forgotten.
