Rescue stories always tug on our heartstrings. And this one sure tugged a little harder than others and you’ll understand as you watch the video of Blue’s rescue below.

 

A dog is supposed to be part of a family’s life for the rest of its existence when it is adopted. Understood circumstances may arise, and a pet must be rehomed. Dogs can be transported to relatives and friends in an ethical manner.

 

We as animal lovers hope that a person who gives up their dog at a kill shelter understands that it is akin to sentencing him to death—but it happens all the time. Being rejected by his family has shattered him emotionally; one dog was insanely devoted to his people after being abandoned by them.

This formerly happy dog was devastated. He sat in his kennel, despondently staring at the wall, and refused to interact with anybody. This concerned shelter workers because he would not make eye contact with potential adopters, unlike the other dogs who wagged their tails as people walked passed them. What if he never found a home? The depressed dog waited for his family to return for him. It was clear what it meant.

 

While he stayed away from people as they went by, he inspected them from the corner of his kennel to see if it was them. And when he finally realized these people were strangers, he would go back to his sad spot and lay back down.

One woman, named Jennifer, heard about the lonely dog and his sad story, and she wanted nothing more than to adopt him. She was crushed to learn that he had yet to return home. She volunteered to become his new family, telling the shelter she desired to adopt the puppy but first needed behavioral testing of the dog to ensure that he would be safe in his new home.

She had anticipated a quiet, reserved dog — but instead, he was overjoyed that he would, at last, be free from the shelter and displayed his true colors.

 

Once Jennifer’s new dog came home, he understood where his real home was. The lesson of the tale: Every shelter dog is deserving of a family. Those who appear unenthused or glum may have a difficult past that has caused them to act this way.
