Sadie the German Shepherd mix has one of the strongest wills to live that Dogwood Animal Rescue has ever seen. She was shot and left in a garbage bag with several broken legs. Most dogs would’ve given up at that point, but Sadie kept going strong. When some kind humans came to the rescue, Sadie wagged her tail and showed them lots of love.
Now, Sadie is at the vet getting some long-overdue medical attention. Through every step of the way, she remains a happy pup. Nothing can break this dog’s spirit!
A Happy Pup with a Sad Past
A field worker came across an unusual sight at a Tulare County orchard in California. He saw a trash bag moving in the field, so he went to investigate. Soon, he realized that there was a dog inside, and the pup crawled toward shade as soon as she was freed. Her back legs appeared broken, and she had at least two bullet wounds on her body.
Robin Reed Galvan lives nearby and has a passion for rescue dogs, so she came to help. The rescuers provided food and water, and they reached out to Tulare County Animal Services to pick up the dog. From there, Dogwood Animal Rescue in Santa Rosa offered to take her in.
“We’ve taken other gunshot wounds. We’ve taken broken legs, and hit by cars,” said Shirley Zindler, Director and Founder of Dogwood Animal Rescue. “Certainly if she has a chance, we want to give it to her.”
The rescue has since named her Sadie, and they have been posting regular updates about her on their Facebook page.
Sadie’s Road to Recovery
The vet discovered that Sadie has three broken legs, resulting from gunshot wounds in the shoulder and leg. So, she is currently receiving surgery for those. Vets will likely only be able to do one leg per session so she doesn’t have to be put under for too long. Her rehabilitation will also take 10 to 12 weeks.
“It made my heart flutter. Just signs of hope. That was awesome. It didn’t matter to her once she knew we were there to help her, she was in great spirits,” Galvan said.
Galvan says that this story is a good reminder to always be aware of your surroundings. If no one had spotted the moving trash bag, Sadie wouldn’t have survived. So, keep an eye out for animals in need so you can help save lives.
