Empty Nest Syndrome is all too real for millions of parents each fall as their college-age children head out into the world for the first time.
One mom has apparently found an effective way to cope with her daughter’s absence – by converting the teen’s room into a stylish puppy pad for the family’s beloved dog!
Maddie is a brand new freshman at Texas A&M University and the primary owner of Nina, an adorable Maltese pup given to her for Christmas by her mom. Like so many parents before her, Maddie’s mom Rosie told her daughter that the puppy was her responsibility. Nina’s crate was even placed in Maddie’s room.
But Rosie was no match for the floofy white ball of cuteness that is Nina! She quickly fell for the little pup and basically claimed her as her own. According to Maddie, Rosie spends “way too much time” with Nina and spoils her with treats and gifts.
“Ever since we got her, my mom has been completely in love,” Maddie told BuzzFeed. “Nina is literally her third child.”
Despite Rosie’s adoration for Nina, Maddie was not prepared for the parental betrayal that occurred less than a month after she left home to begin her freshman year. Her twin-sized bed was barely cold before Rosie began converting the teen’s room into a luxury dog suite for Nina!

Maddie came home for a weekend visit and found that her bedding had been replaced with a new frilly white comforter to match Nina’s beautiful coat. The redesign also includes a new chair for the dog and the removal of her crate – an item Nina no longer needs now that she has her own room.
Rosie had apparently joked with her daughter about redoing the room for Nina, but the teen did not take her seriously until she received the photos.
Maddie posted the images to Twitter, writing,
“I’m in college for not even a month & my mom rearranges my entire room just for my dog.”
Although a few folks expressed sympathy and solidarity, the general concensus of the Twittersphere is that Nina deserves all that and more!

Maddie has since come to terms with the changes and supports her mom’s decision to redirect her affections onto Nina.
“She loves that dog, so if that’s what she wants to do.”
