Long after the visitors disappeared and the stadium fell silent, two lonely orcas are still performing inside an abandoned marine park in France. New footage from Marineland of Antibes shows Wikie, a 23-year-old mother, and her 11-year-old son, Keijo, swimming through filthy water and repeating tricks they were taught during years in captivity. The heartbreaking scene has stunned millions online, especially after the whales appeared to perform automatically despite having no audience left to entertain. For many viewers, the emotional video captures not only the suffering of the stranded orcas but also their desperate need for freedom and a safe new home.

New drone footage has revealed the heartbreaking reality facing Wikie, a 23-year-old mother orca, and her 11-year-old son, Keijo. The pair remain trapped inside the closed marine park months after it shut down in January due to France’s upcoming ban on orca shows.

At first glance, the footage shared by filmmaker Seph Lawless looked almost unbearable. Wikie floated motionless near the surface of the dirty tank, so still she appeared lifeless. Then she slowly moved, lifting her head toward the drone hovering above. Moments later, Keijo joined her, and the two began swimming together again.

What happened next devastated viewers around the world.

The mother and son started performing.

They leaped and spun through the water as if an audience still surrounded them. Every movement seemed automatic, deeply ingrained after years spent entertaining crowds. But this time, there was no applause waiting for them. Only empty stands and silence.

Lawless described the emotional moment in his viral post.

“Leaping, twirling, performing the only language they were ever taught… but this time, there was no crowd. Just me …and their longing to be free.”

The heartbreaking clip quickly spread online, leaving millions emotional over the whales’ condition and isolation.

Two Orcas Running Out of Time

Animal advocates say Wikie and Keijo are in serious danger if they remain at the deteriorating facility much longer.

Marketa Schusterova, co-founder of activist group TideBreakers, previously warned that the orcas could become severely ill without urgent relocation.

“We know from reviewing footage that the tank is causing a hazard,” she explained. “We know that it’s not being cleaned, it’s falling apart.”

The once-busy marine park now appears eerily abandoned. Green-tinted water fills the cracked enclosure while the whales continue circling the same confined space each day. For animals that would normally travel vast distances in the open ocean, the conditions have sparked growing international concern.

Even Marineland managers acknowledged the urgency earlier this year, stating that the whales “must leave now” for their own well-being.

Hope briefly appeared in April when Loro Parque Zoo in Tenerife proposed taking in the pair. But the plan was ultimately rejected by authorities, leaving the whales with nowhere to go.

Now, many experts believe a sanctuary may be their best chance.

Lori Marino, president of The Whale Sanctuary Project, said their planned sanctuary site in Nova Scotia could offer the safest and most humane future available for Wikie and Keijo. Unlike traditional marine parks, sanctuaries are designed to provide rescued whales with far larger, more natural environments where they can recover physically and emotionally.

In May, the French government reportedly resumed discussions with The Whale Sanctuary Project to explore possible solutions for the stranded orcas. The organization later confirmed it remains committed to helping secure “the best possible future” for the whales.

Millions Rally Behind the Orcas

As the footage spread online, viewers flooded social media with emotional reactions.

“Oh my God I’m in tears,” one person commented. “How can this be happening?”

Another viewer called the video “quite literally gut-wrenching,” while others said the whales seemed to be performing as a desperate plea for help.

Many people were especially moved by the bond between Wikie and Keijo. Despite the harsh conditions around them, the mother rarely strays far from her son’s side. In the drone footage, the pair swim together almost constantly, their movements appearing both synchronized and painfully routine.

For years, performing was all they knew.

Now, supporters hope those same performances may finally help bring worldwide attention to their suffering and lead to something better.

Although their future remains uncertain, growing public pressure has renewed conversations about relocating the whales to a safer environment where they could finally experience peace after years in captivity.

For now, Wikie and Keijo continue waiting in the still waters of an empty park, carrying on the routines they were taught long ago, even after the audience disappeared.
