One year ago, a crooked-faced pooch named Picasso was rescued from a kill shelter along with his brother, Pablo.

Liesl Wilhardt, the executive director of Luvable Dog Rescue in Oregon, welcomed the bonded pair with the intention of finding them the perfect adoptive family. But when tragedy touched both Wilhardt and Picasso, the veteran rescuer realized that Picasso was already home.

Last week, The Oregon Humane Society’s Diamond Collar Hero Awards honored the pooch with the signature toothy grin for his message of hope and ability to overcome incredible odds.

“Picasso has overcome challenges that most dogs don’t ever have to, from surviving an assaulter to living on the streets,” Wilhardt told The Register-Guard. “And he’s done it all with courage and grace.”

The Diamond Collar Hero Awards also recognizes pets and people who have acted to save humans or animals in peril or served their community with undying loyalty – qualities that definitely apply to this special pup!

Picasso is now in training to become a therapy dog. Alongside Wilhardt, he will put his famous face and endearing personality to use inspiring even more people in need.

In addition to his Diamond Collar, Picasso has also been nominated for a 2018 American Humane Hero Dog Award in the Emerging Hero category! Voting is now open to determine the three finalists in each category. To place your vote for Picasso, click here.

You can vote for your favorite dog in each of the seven categories each day, for a total of seven votes a day until April 25.
