Mary Nguyen, a 25-year-old student in Minnesota, is looking to warn people about her recent experience with Delta Airlines. Her husband is living in Guatemala and the couple decided to have Bunny, their 8-month-old German Shepherd puppy, go live with him there. Nguyen not only drove all the way to Wisconsin to ship Bunny with the proper paperwork endorsed, she paid Pet Air Carrier $3,000 in shipping. But that was only the beginning of the struggle.
Nguyen told CBS News that the officials at La Aurora International Airport in Guatemala City had all of the appropriate paperwork for Bunny when she arrived. Unfortunately, they misplaced it; therefore, they refused to release Bunny from custody. Despite everything Nguyen and her husband had done to transport Bunny correctly, Delta Airlines in Guatemala demanded another $3,000 for her husband to take Bunny home that day. Unable to pay the extra money, the airline kept Bunny for 33 hours in what became considered a “hostage situation.”
“They have all the documents they need on their scratch pad to release her but refuse to do so without the hard copy that they lost,” Nguyen told CBS. “The document has been in their possession the whole [time] since I’ve surrendered my dog over.”
Thankfully, Bunny was eventually released – after nearly 3 entire days in their custody and away from her family. A Delta spokesperson told CBS News in a statement that they are working with Nguyen and her husband directly and would be refunding the cost of shipment while new paperwork was sent to Guatemala. It is unknown how and where Bunny was kept during her 33 hours with Delta, but we are happy to report she is with her family now.
