After everything Maya had endured, seeing her perched proudly atop her kennel was the kind of moment that made shelter staff laugh and feel hopeful at the same time. The 5-year-old Husky had arrived at Richmond Animal Care & Control carrying painful reminders of a difficult past, but anyone meeting her now might first notice something entirely different. Maya is playful, curious, remarkably clever, and apparently convinced that kennel walls are simply challenges waiting to be solved. One day, staff walked into the shelter and discovered their fluffy resident standing somewhere they never expected to find her.
Maya was not inside her kennel. Instead, she was calmly standing on top of it, looking as though she belonged there. Staff could hardly believe what they were seeing. Somehow, the agile Husky had climbed the kennel walls, found a small opening near the wall, and squeezed through before settling herself on the wire cover above.
“We were dying laughing and then really wondered how she managed it,” Christie Peters, director of Richmond Animal Care & Control, told The Dodo.
The shelter later shared the funny discovery on Facebook, joking that Maya was casually relaxing as though she had paid rent. Her impressive escape had all the personality staff had come to expect from the energetic Husky.
There had been no frantic destruction or chaos. Maya had simply studied her surroundings, figured out the puzzle, and climbed her way to a better view. But behind the laughter was a story that made Maya’s carefree personality even more meaningful.
Maya’s Painful Past Makes Her Joy Even Sweeter
Only a few months earlier, in May, animal control officers had rescued Maya from a yard in Richmond, Virginia. Her circumstances then were painfully different from the playful scene shelter workers would later witness. A chain had been wrapped twice around Maya’s neck. According to Peters, it had become embedded in her skin, leaving the dog in significant pain and discomfort.
It would have been understandable if such an experience had left Maya frightened or hesitant around people. Instead, shelter staff watched her reveal an extraordinary enthusiasm for life as she recovered.
Peters described Maya as a “very exuberant” dog who loves life and the people around her. Her happy personality became one of her defining traits, gradually replacing the painful circumstances of her rescue with happier memories.
“She is such a happy-go-lucky dog,” Peters said.
As Maya grew more comfortable, her intelligence and curiosity became impossible to miss. Unfortunately for shelter staff, that also meant devising increasingly creative ways to stay one step ahead of their resident problem-solver. Following Maya’s kennel climbing adventure, the staff modified the covered kennel so there was no longer a tempting opening at the back. Peters explained that they clipped the cover so it sat flush against the wall, making another rooftop visit much harder to accomplish.
The extra security was necessary, but Maya would soon receive something even better than an escape-proof kennel. She moved into a foster home.
Away from the shelter environment, Maya appears much more comfortable and has reportedly stopped plotting elaborate escapes. Instead of searching for a way out of her kennel, she can focus on enjoying the safety, attention, and everyday comforts of life in a home. Her journey is especially moving considering where it began. Maya went from living with a painful chain embedded around her neck to becoming a joyful dog whose clever antics leave the people around her smiling.
The physical reminders of her past may tell part of Maya’s story, but they do not define the dog she has become. Her playful nature, affection for people, and determination to enjoy life have given shelter staff something much brighter to remember.
Peters believes Maya’s intelligence is simply another reason she is special. “We think she is amazing, clearly a problem solver,” Peters said. “We hope someone will adopt her and think the same!”
For now, Maya can enjoy the comfort of her foster home while waiting for the next chapter of her life. After proving that even a covered kennel could not contain her curiosity, this resilient Husky seems more than ready for a future filled with safety, affection, and plenty of opportunities to put that clever mind to better use.
