Last summer, a very special pair of pals named Colt and Charlie arrived at Wisconsin’s Fox Valley Humane Association (FVHA).
The best friends met at an Arkansas shelter when the staff placed a then-6-week-old Charlie in Colt’s kennel to cheer him up as he recovered from hip surgery. Despite their 7 month age difference, the two became inseparable.
And when I say inseparable, I mean it quite literally – Charlie insists on being in physical contact with his best buddy at all times!
The pups were lucky enough to be transported together from Arkansas’ Heber Springs Humane Society to FVHA in Wisconsin for a better chance at adoption.
The staff immediately fell in love with the bonded pair and decided to seek out a family willing to give them both a forever home!
Although Colt was much bigger than Charlie, both dogs were still puppies and very active. Many potential adopters offered to take Charlie, but few were willing to take on both – until a growing young family came along!
The couple already had a young toddler daughter, so they were no strangers to chaos! Adding Colt and Charlie into the mix seemed like a natural fit.
Six weeks after welcoming the pair into their home, they sent an update to the pups’ friends at the Fox Valley Humane Association.
“We can surely say the past 6 weeks have been an adventure for all of us. There’s no question that you have to be slightly crazy to purchase a home and then 1 week later adopt 2 puppies,” it read in part. “Even through the double puppy frustrations we know that we have a great pair of dogs and couldn’t be happier that we were able to give these two characters their forever home.”
Earlier this month, Colt and Charlie – now renamed Niko – celebrated the one year anniversary of their “Gotcha Day” with their loving family!
Although the pair have experienced many changes, including a new baby brother, other things have stayed very much the same.
Niko still insists on snuggling with (or on!) his big brother as often as possible – even though he is no longer a tiny pup!
“It’s safe to say this duo has kept us on our toes for the past year and will continue to do so for a long time. They are still completely attached at the hip and hardly leave each others’ side,” Colt and Niko’s mom wrote in her Gotcha Day update.
“We welcomed our son to the circus on June 8th and under our supervision they have done great with him as well. Overall they drive us nuts most days but we’re glad we gave this crazy duo their forever home!”
Colt and Niko owe their wonderful new lives to the devoted rescuers at Heber Springs Humane Society and Fox Valley Humane Association – and, of course, their loving family for taking a chance on not one, but two crazy pups!
