Sometimes rescue arrives in the smallest window of time. A tiny puppy was discovered alone in an alley, so weak that the people who found him immediately knew something was terribly wrong. They placed a bowl of water nearby but avoided handling him because they had a puppy of their own and feared he might be carrying parvovirus. What looked at first like a lost little dog was actually a medical emergency, and thankfully, the call for help reached Donna before it was too late.

Donna headed to the alley expecting to find a frightened puppy wandering around. Instead, she discovered the baby collapsed on the ground, barely able to help himself. She gently wrapped him in a towel and carried him toward her Jeep. Up close, the seriousness of his condition became even clearer. Fleas crawled across his tiny body, and his gums were almost completely white, a frightening sign that he was severely anemic.
The people who spotted him had found him at a critical moment. Donna knew the puppy needed veterinary care as quickly as possible. She placed him safely inside the vehicle, fastened her seatbelt, and prepared to leave. Then her phone rang again.
Another dog needed help. The second emergency was only about four minutes away. Despite already having a critically ill puppy with her, Donna knew there was another life nearby that could not afford to wait. So the little puppy went along for the rescue.
A Second Dog Was Waiting Nearby
Beside the road sat an extremely thin female blue Pit Bull. She did not run when help approached. Instead, she remained there as if she had been waiting for someone to finally notice her. Her body told its own painful story. She was emaciated, exhausted, and covered in fleas and flea dirt. Yet even in such poor condition, she greeted her rescuers with gentle tail wags and a sweet expression.
There was also a strange smell coming from her coat. Rescuers later realized that she had motor oil on her body.

Motor oil has sometimes been used as a misguided home remedy for fleas, based on the belief that it will suffocate them. Applying motor oil to a dog’s skin, however, can be dangerous and may cause harmful exposure. What this exhausted dog needed was proper veterinary care, nutrition, rest, and a safe place to recover.
Donna carefully brought her into the vehicle. In only a matter of minutes, one rescue mission had become two. The puppy and the adult dog were rushed back for care, where the team could finally begin understanding just how much help each animal needed.
Care for Cosmo
The puppy was named Cosmo. Because of his severe condition, he was tested for parvovirus, but thankfully, the result was negative. X-rays were also taken to check for a possible blockage, and those came back negative as well.
Cosmo received Capstar to begin addressing the heavy flea infestation. His dangerously pale gums remained a major concern, however, and his anemia was serious enough that routine shelter care would not be sufficient.
He was transferred to a 24-hour emergency veterinary partner, where he could receive continuous monitoring, heat support, and a blood transfusion. After being found collapsed and alone in an alley, Cosmo was finally surrounded by people determined to give his fragile body a chance to recover.
Saving Starlight
The adult dog was named Starlight. Her first steps toward recovery included a careful bath to remove the motor oil from her coat and treatment for the fleas covering her body. Because she was so severely underweight, rescuers could not simply give her a large meal and hope for the best.
Instead, Starlight was placed on a controlled refeeding schedule designed to slowly and safely reintroduce her body to regular nutrition. Her condition showed just how depleted she had become.
She also had open pressure sores on her hips, likely made worse by having so little body fat protecting her bones. Once the team prepared a soft, comfortable place for her, Starlight immediately fell asleep, finally able to rest somewhere safe.

Cosmo and Starlight arrived from different places and under different circumstances, yet their paths crossed within minutes. Both were exhausted, covered in fleas, and desperately in need of care. Now, neither animal has to face recovery alone. Cosmo has access to intensive veterinary treatment, while Starlight has food, warmth, medical attention, and a comfortable place to regain her strength.
Their recoveries may take time, especially after everything their bodies have endured. But the frightened puppy found collapsed in an alley, and the painfully thin dog waiting beside the road had something they did not have before: safety, care, and the opportunity to heal.
