Dogs have a way of touching our hearts in unexpected ways. This is the uplifting tale of Chunk, a three-month-old pitbull puppy who was found alone, tied to a tree in Sacramento on a chilly October day.

The crew from Fire Station No. 14 happened to spot the poor little puppy shivering by the roadside while they were on their way to an emergency. Despite her small size, she was dealing with a lot—her tiny body was covered in scabs, her legs were swollen, and she was nearly hairless from a skin condition known as mange. The sight of her was heart-wrenching.

After completing their call, firefighter Mike Thawley couldn’t shake the image of the abandoned puppy. Determined to help, he returned to rescue her and bring her back to the station. Once there, Chunk was met with warmth and kindness. The firefighters bathed her, snuggled her, and did everything they could to make her feel safe.

Chunk’s battle with mange required ongoing care, so the firefighters took her to the Front Street Animal Shelter. Here, she received the medical attention she needed. The shelter staff put her in cozy clothes to keep her warm as she began her road to recovery. Even though her mange was non-contagious and mild, her healing journey would be lengthy.

But Chunk had left a mark on Thawley’s heart. The very next day, he returned to the shelter to check on her. Chunk’s tail-wagging welcome was all the confirmation he needed; she hadn’t forgotten him. “We all just kind of fell in love with her,” Thawley reflected on the rescue.

The connection didn’t stop there. Thawley soon brought his wife and three daughters to the shelter, and before long, Chunk had captured all their hearts. It became clear that this little pup might just become the newest member of the family. The Sacramento Fire Department’s Facebook page even hinted at Chunk’s future home, humorously noting that the vote seemed to favor adopting her by four to one.

As it turned out, they were right. The Thawley family began the adoption process, waiting patiently as Chunk completed her mange treatment. After four months, she was declared healthy and ready for her new life. The Thawleys officially welcomed her home and fittingly named her Chunk.

Reflecting on the story, Bobby Mann from the Front Street Animal Shelter said, “I think what’s great about this whole story is that not only did this dog find its forever home, but had the opportunity to go to a foster home, which we’re always looking for at our shelter, to get happy and healthy.”

He was severely malnourished, with his body wasting away. His matted hair had accumulated not only urine, but also feces, leaving him with painful open wounds.

Chunk’s story is a beautiful example of how love and kindness can transform lives. Her journey from a frightened, neglected puppy to a cherished family member is heartwarming. It’s a reminder of the strong bonds we can form with animals and how much they can impact our lives.

Today, Chunk is more than just a pet; she is a beloved part of the Thawley family. Her story stands as a beacon of hope, showing how one act of compassion can change lives—for both animals and humans alike. Chunk reminds us that every animal deserves a chance at happiness and health, and sometimes, in rescuing them, we find ourselves being rescued too.
