Every dog deserves to spend their senior years surrounded by love, comfort, and the people they trust most. Sadly, that was not the future waiting for Riley. At 14 years old, the elderly dog found herself alone at Colleton County Animal Shelter after being picked up as a stray. Shelter staff reached out to her owner, hoping he would come for her, but the response they received was heartbreaking. Instead of reclaiming Riley, he told them he had already planned to have her euthanized and would not be returning for her, leaving the faithful senior dog abandoned when she needed compassion most.

Heartbreaking Answer
Riley arrived at Colleton County Animal Shelter as a stray. Shelter staff were eventually able to contact her owner, hoping he would come for her. Instead, they received devastating news. He confirmed her name was Riley, then told staff he had already planned to have her euthanized and that they could proceed with it themselves. He had no intention of coming to get her.
After spending 14 years by her human’s side, Riley was left alone in a shelter, facing an uncertain future.
When Dr. Klein visited the shelter, she learned about Riley’s situation and went to meet her. The elderly dog sat quietly in her kennel, clearly uncomfortable and struggling to move. Riley’s age was only part of the challenge she faced. Her front legs were severely splayed, making every step difficult and painful.
The moment Dr. Klein saw her, she knew Riley deserved more than a lonely shelter kennel.
On the drive home, Dr. Klein called her family to explain that she had “done something,” a phrase that quickly revealed she had a dog riding alongside her. Riley was coming home.
Although no one knew how much time Riley had left, Dr. Klein was determined that her remaining days would be spent surrounded by care, comfort, and love. Riley would become part of her personal pack, with her pain managed and her needs prioritized.
A New Chapter Filled With Compassion

Riley was diagnosed with Hyperextension Carpal Syndrome, a condition that can develop from injury, excessive stress on the joints, or other underlying causes. The disorder affects the stability of the joints and can lead to chronic pain and significant mobility challenges.
If Riley had been much younger, surgery involving joint fusion may have been considered. At her age, however, the focus became improving her quality of life and keeping her as comfortable as possible.
Dr. Klein immediately got to work creating a treatment plan tailored to Riley’s needs. She was started on anti-inflammatory medication and pain management therapy to help reduce her discomfort. Custom splints were ordered and fitted to support her weakened legs, giving her greater stability as she moved around.
Riley’s care did not stop there.
Each week, Dr. Conrad visits to provide acupuncture treatments, helping ease Riley’s chronic pain and improve her comfort. The dedication of both veterinarians has given Riley something she had been missing for a long time: relief.
As the weeks passed, Riley began showing signs that she was feeling better.
The quiet, uncomfortable dog who first arrived at the shelter began to reveal a different side of herself. She wagged her tail more often. She showed interest in toys. She became engaged with the people around her.
Most encouraging of all, Riley was even spotted trotting around the yard.
For a dog who once struggled through each painful step, those small moments represented something extraordinary. They were signs that she finally felt safe, cared for, and comfortable enough to enjoy life again.
While Riley’s future remains uncertain because of her age and condition, one thing is clear: she will never have to face hardship alone again.

Today, Riley is surrounded by people who are committed to her well-being. She has a warm place to rest, medical care to ease her pain, and a family that treasures every day they have with her.
Her story is a powerful reminder that even when an animal’s time may be limited, love and compassion can transform their world. Riley may not have many years ahead of her, but thanks to the people who refused to give up on her, every day she has left is filled with comfort, dignity, and the care she always deserved.
