Every day, countless shelter dogs wait patiently for someone to notice them, hoping their forever family will finally walk through the door. For George, that wait has lasted nearly 200 days, a long stretch filled with uncertainty and missed opportunities. Yet despite being overlooked time and time again, the lovable pup has found a touching way to cope with the stress and loneliness. Through the comfort of his favorite stuffed toys, George has discovered a sense of security that helps him navigate each day while he continues searching for a place to truly call home.

George’s journey began last November when he arrived at Chicago Animal Care and Control as a stray. Because he was microchipped, staff believed someone would soon come looking for him. But as days turned into weeks, no one ever arrived to claim him.
Eventually, George was welcomed by One Tail at a Time, a Chicago-based rescue organization. It did not take long for his caregivers to notice something special about him. Whenever George felt uncertain or anxious, he would reach for a stuffed toy.
His attachment to the plush companions was immediate.
“His love of stuffies was pretty much instant!” Alli Rooney, marketing manager at One Tail at a Time, told The Dodo.
When George moved into his first foster home, rescuers made sure he had plenty of stuffed animals to accompany him. Surrounded by his favorite toys, he began settling into a routine and showing everyone just how lovable he truly is.
“George is incredibly sweet with people, very smart, and obviously adorable,” Rooney said. “He also has great household manners and is overall an easy dog!”
At home, George enjoys all the simple pleasures of being a dog. He loves snuggling with his people, relaxing nearby, and spending quiet moments with his favorite toys close at hand. His gentle personality quickly wins over everyone he meets.
His Stuffed Toys Help Him Feel Safe

While George thrives around people, life is not completely stress-free for him. One challenge he continues to face is encountering other dogs during walks.
Being around unfamiliar dogs can make George nervous. Walks that should have been relaxing often became overwhelming whenever another pup appeared nearby.
Then his foster family discovered something remarkable.
When George carries one of his beloved stuffed toys during walks, his focus shifts away from the distractions around him. The familiar comfort of the toy seems to calm his nerves and give him confidence.
“When he sees other dogs on walks and has a stuffie, he can ignore the distraction and keep his pace with his walker,” Rooney said.
The simple coping tool has made a meaningful difference in George’s daily life. What might look like an ordinary stuffed animal to others serves as a source of reassurance for him.
After a day of adventures, George often curls up beside his favorite toy and drifts peacefully to sleep. The plush companions that help him stay calm during the day remain by his side when it is time to rest.
Despite spending so much time waiting for a forever home, George continues to greet each day with hope. His rescuers remain optimistic that the perfect family is out there and will eventually discover what a wonderful companion he is.
“He loves cuddling, playing and snoozing right next to you. He hasn’t met kids in our care yet, but we suspect he would do well with them. He hasn’t met cats, but we don’t think he would be a fan,” Rooney said.

For now, George will keep carrying his treasured stuffies wherever he goes, finding comfort in their familiar presence while he waits for the family who will love him for the rest of his life.
His forever home may not have arrived yet, but thanks to the people caring for him and the stuffed toys that bring him peace, George knows he is not facing the journey alone.
