Shelter volunteers are often the unsung heroes of animal rescue. Thanks to their selflessness, dogs find a soft touch and a gentle voice in an otherwise frightening place. The simple act of an unscheduled visit for some cuddle time, an extra romp in the play yard, or an afternoon outing can make a world of difference when it comes to socialization and trust. One special volunteer devoted her day to making a mama dog named Maye feel like a Queen!

Nancy Riley is a mom herself. She decided that the best way to spend Mother’s Day this year would be to spoil a special dog from one of Atlanta’s LifeLine Animal Project sponsored shelters. When told about the plan, the volunteer coordinator instantly recommended Maye, a sweet mixed breed pooch who had clearly had a litter or two before her rescue.

Nancy and her beautiful six-year-old daughter, Somi arrived at the DeKalb County Shelter at 10 AM Sunday morning to begin the festivities. Maye was ecstatic to be sprung from her cage!

The three ladies first attended a fancy Mother’s Day brunch at the Atlanta City Winery where Maye was treated to doggie delicacies from their special Canine Menu.

Next, they headed to a trendy gourmet popsicle joint, King of Pops, where Maye devoured a frozen King of PUPS dessert.

In order to burn off some of those decadent calories, the trio headed to the Atlanta Beltline for a nice walk. Maye attracted lots of attention and made some new friends along the way.

Finally, the ladies checked in to the boutique Hotel Indigo in Midtown for an evening of air conditioned luxury.

LifeLine Animal Project contacted them about Nancy’s Mother’s Day plan, and the folks at Hotel Indigo went out of their way to make it all the more special!

The awesome staff  even prepared a special gift basket when they heard that Nancy, Somi and Maye were coming!

The basket included a framed photo of Nancy snuggling with a shelter pup, chocolate covered strawberries, mini cakes, power bars and beverages for the wonderful humans, plus tons of toys and treats for Maye!

A handwritten note proclaimed that the gift basket was courtesy of Hotel Indigo’s own resident dog, Indy.

Passersby could not resist stopping for a visit with Maye while she enjoyed some fresh evening air on the hotel balcony. Nancy told iHeartDogs that despite her unknown history, this gal is as outgoing and loving as they come!

After a day packed with love, treats, play, and lots of cuddles, Maye slept like a stone on the big, extravagant bed.

As much as Nancy hated returning Maye to the shelter this morning, she is hoping that the exposure from her special Mother’s Day adventure will bring attention to this wonderful gal and help her find a great adoptive family! Nancy says:

“Mae deserves a loving home because she herself is nothing but love!”
