Charlie Brown is a Dachshund mix that has lived at the SPCA of Hernando County, Florida for several years. He is not very trusting of people, which makes him hard to adopt out. Though once he warms up, he is a love bug.
Suzi Q was the new girl in town and even less trusting of humans than Charlie Brown. She would bark if anyone got near her. She would need even more work than Charlie Brown if she was going to be adoptable.
Vreli Middleton is a canine massage therapist who works with the shelters dogs once a week to help them overcome stress and any injuries or conditions they may have. She also provides the much needed one-on-one time that shelter dogs don’t always get. Middleton is the one who first noticed a connection between these two shy dogs.
“While working with Suzi and a couple of the other dogs she was in a run with I noticed she would often sit against the fence with the next run, which was where Charlie was, and he would be sitting next to her [on the other side of the fence],” she told iHeartDogs.com “I suggested we put them together as I could see there was a connection and felt it could help Suzi learn to trust those people that Charlie trusted.”
It was magic. The two instantly bonded.
“It was instant success, they played so well and obviously thought the world of each other,” Middleton says.

But who would be willing to adopt not one, but two shy dogs? Well Mr. & Mrs. Brown as they are called at the shelter, are lucky dogs because a women named Carol, came by the shelter and expressed interest in them because they were so cute. Although dismayed about their shyness at first, Carol has been visiting the shelter frequently to get the two used to her.
With Charlie’s help, Suzi has progressed much faster than she would have on her own.
“The staff and volunteers are obviously delighted, it would have taken a long time to get Suzi ready for adoption and time is something the staff at the shelter have little of,” Middleton says.
