In a remarkable display of bravery and compassion, Callie Clemens, accompanied by her loyal dog Giselle and a dedicated group of volunteers, led a daring rescue mission in Houston that captured the hearts of many. Over the course of three relentless days, Clemens and her team navigated through dark, cockroach-infested storm drains in a determined effort to save a litter of helpless puppies trapped underground. Driven by an unwavering commitment to animal welfare, Clemens embarked on this challenging and perilous journey to ensure that no puppy was left behind, showcasing her dedication to saving lives even in the most difficult circumstances.

The rescue operation began after concerned citizens reported seeing several puppies crossing a busy street before vanishing into the storm drains. The sound of their distressed whimpers echoed from the depths, alerting those nearby to the dire situation unfolding beneath their feet. Clemens, who has a long history of rescuing animals in the area, did not hesitate to take action. As the former daughter-in-law of New York Yankees legend Roger Clemens, Callie Clemens is no stranger to challenges, and this was no exception.

Houston, a city notorious for “puppy dumping,” where unwanted dogs are abandoned to fend for themselves, has seen its fair share of heartbreaking cases. Clemens has been at the forefront of addressing this issue, having founded the nonprofit organization Paws Off The Streets, dedicated to rescuing stray and abandoned animals. Clemens, who has rescued countless animals over the years, knew that the puppies had little chance of survival without intervention. “I knew no one else would do it, so I had to jump in,” Clemens explained, underscoring her deep commitment to the cause despite the significant risks involved.

The storm drains presented an especially dangerous environment. Filled with standing water, swarms of cockroaches, and narrow, labyrinthine passages, they are a place few would dare to enter. But Clemens, driven by her love for animals and her resolve to save the helpless puppies, led the way, often venturing into the unknown with only the cries of the trapped puppies to guide her.

On the first night, Clemens, along with Giselle, a highly trained dog with a keen nose for tracking, ventured into the drains. The team quickly realized that the task ahead was more daunting than anticipated. The puppies, frightened and disoriented, scattered deeper into the drains as the rescue team approached. The dark, damp environment made it difficult to locate them, and the team was forced to crawl through narrow passages and wade through filthy water in their pursuit.

Despite these challenges, the team’s perseverance paid off on Friday, when they successfully located and rescued two of the black lab puppies. The sense of relief was palpable, but Clemens knew that their mission was far from over. The faint cries of at least one more puppy could still be heard from somewhere deep within the drains, spurring Clemens and her team to continue their efforts. With the rescued puppies safe and sound, Clemens immediately began preparing for another descent into the storm drains the following night, determined to bring the remaining puppy to safety.

The emotional toll of the mission was significant. Clemens, who has a personal history of rescuing animals in distress, found herself particularly invested in the outcome of this rescue. She admitted to considering adopting the final puppy herself, should they succeed in finding it. “There’s no way the puppy can get out on its own, so it’s up to us, and I have no hesitation about going down there to get it,” Clemens declared, reflecting her unwavering commitment to the rescue.

Clemens’ dedication to animal rescue is well-known within the community. For seven years, she has been an advocate for Houston’s stray and abandoned animals, leading numerous rescue missions with a remarkable track record. Throughout her years of work, Clemens has never lost a dog, and she has no intention of starting now. Her fearless approach to rescuing animals has earned her a reputation as one of the city’s most determined and compassionate animal advocates.

Late on Friday night, Clemens and Giselle, alongside their team of volunteers, descended into the storm drains once more. The rescue mission had now become a race against time. The storm drains were a treacherous maze, and with each passing hour, the chances of finding the remaining puppy grew slimmer. But Clemens was undeterred. Guided by the faint sounds of the puppy’s cries, the team pushed forward, inching deeper into the labyrinthine network of drains.

Their efforts were met with numerous obstacles. The remaining puppies, likely disoriented and scared, had moved further into the drains, making them even harder to locate. The team resorted to using recorded dog sounds on their phones, hoping to coax the frightened puppies out of hiding. The conditions were far from ideal—wading through the stagnant water and avoiding the cockroach nests that lined the walls was a harrowing experience. Yet, the volunteers pressed on, driven by their shared goal of bringing the remaining puppies to safety.

“I know they’re still in there; they’ve just moved further down,” Clemens affirmed. The team’s unwavering resolve was evident as they continued their search, even as exhaustion began to set in. The city of Houston, recognizing the importance of the mission, provided support to Clemens and her team. The city unlocked the drains, granting them access, and dispatched engineers to assist with the search. One engineer went above and beyond, creating a detailed map of the storm drain system to aid in the rescue efforts. However, even with this assistance, the task remained formidable.

Clemens speculated that the remaining puppies had moved north, possibly into an even narrower section of the storm drain system. This meant the team would need to access the drains from a different, more challenging entrance. “It’s tough to get in there. You have to be small because not everyone can fit,” Clemens explained, emphasizing the physical challenges posed by the rescue mission.

Despite these challenges, Clemens refused to give up. She left food and water for the remaining puppies, ensuring they had sustenance while she continued her search. Clemens was prepared to spend the next two days in the storm drains if necessary, determined to save every last puppy. “I’m fully invested, hopeful, and optimistic. It’s hard to make me quit. This is something I’m very passionate about,” she stated.

Clemens’ dedication to rescuing Houston’s stray animals extends far beyond this single mission. She has long been a vocal advocate for addressing the city’s significant stray animal problem, with an estimated 1 million strays roaming the streets. Over the years, she has rescued countless animals from dire situations, including a memorable incident in May 2021 when she saved a kitten trapped in a water-filled drain. Her extensive experience with the city’s storm drain system has made her uniquely equipped to tackle these challenging rescues.

As of now, two of the puppies have been successfully rescued, and the fate of the remaining ones hangs in the balance. But Clemens remains undeterred by the difficulties and dangers. “I do some pretty crazy stuff, but I try not to think about it—I just do it,” she confessed, highlighting the courage and resolve that drives her.
