Valerie Alexander lives in Philadelphia’s Old City neighborhood, where she shares a home with her best friend, Rosie. Like any good dog, Rosie has stood by her master through thick and thin during their five years together. Now, as Valerie faces her final days, she is determined to secure a bright future for her faithful sidekick.
Suffering from terminal brain cancer, Valerie’s final wish is to see Rosie in a new loving home before she passes away.
“She’s part of my family,” Valerie told Fox 29. “She’s my child.”
Part of the loving dog mom’s wish is to meet the person (or persons) who will be caring for her cherished pup when she is gone. Yet, according to Valerie’s doctor, she has just weeks left to live, making the search for Rosie’s forever family all the more urgent.
“I want to make sure she gets as much love after I’m gone as she gives. I don’t want her to be sad, or locked in a cage or treated badly. I want someone who loves her,” Valerie said.
Although Valerie’s time is short, she says it would mean the world to her and help her truly rest in peace if she could see Rosie safe, happy, and provided for before she passes.
“All I know is I am alive today and anything beyond that is a gift, which is true for everyone.”
Charles Bowles—Valerie’s friend and Rosie’s dogwalker—has stepped in to help with the search. He describes Rosie’s perfect human as someone with lots of energy, plenty of tennis balls, and no other pets in their home.
“Either one of two things will be good for Rosie,” Charles said, “either someone young and energetic that needs a running buddy, or someone who has a big yard and lets Rosie run around all day.”
