3 Dangerous Dog Treat Ingredients You Should Always Avoid

| Published on December 13, 2016

I think we can all agree that we want what’s best for our dogs. Even the little stuff — think about how much time you spent deliberating about which bowl to get. Sure, it’s just for food and water, but if you’re like me, you didn’t just grab the first one you saw. You weighed the pros and cons, contemplated designs. All this for a bowl!

Now think about the last time you bought treats for your canine companion. This is a far greater decision than deciding on a bowl. Did you look at brand names? Bag designs? Price? Ingredients? This last item is probably one of the most important aspects to consider. After all, treats are a part of your dog’s diet, so getting only the highest quality ingredients is vital. But do you know what quality ingredients to look for? The ones you definitely don’t want? It can be overwhelming. Try reading the ingredients list on popular treats…wheat flour, glycerin, wheat gluten, sodium bisulfate, xanthan gum, mixed tocopherols? WHAT? Now, I’m no chemist or dietician, but these don’t sound like things I would want to eat, let alone my pups.

Look Out For These Ingredients

Some ingredients, like fillers, are relatively harmless but aren’t good for them either. They do exactly what the name implies – they fill space…space that should be “filled” with healthy, natural ingredients. Other ingredients can cause medical problems, such as obesity or worse. Let’s start with 3 things to look out for the next time you’re shopping:

• Corn, Wheat & Soy

• Meat Meals and By-Products

• Preservatives

So now that we know a little about what we don’t want, how do we select great tasting, healthy treats for our dogs? Well, the best solution, while a little labor intensive, is to make treats at home. This way you know exactly what goes into them. If you’re like me, this sounds like a great idea, but you just don’t have the time. So what’s the next best idea?

The Answer To Your Dog Treat Problems!

Well, if you made your own treats, you’d probably use a single, quality ingredient. So maybe you should look for treats that have only one ingredient. “Good luck,” you say? Well, that’s all about to change.
