Among the homeless population in America, an average of five to ten percent of the citizens have dogs and cats that remain by their side on the streets. In some areas, that average can reach as high as twenty-five percent. And most homeless shelters don’t allow pets, which means people and their beloved furry companions are forced to remain on the streets or make the painful choice of saying goodbye.

But groups like Feeding the Pets of Tulsa’s Homeless bring hope and good food to the homeless community’s pets. They couldn’t do it without you, though, dog lover!

How You Help Feed Hungry Dogs

When you shop with iHeartDogs, you’re empowering our partnership with Greater Good Charities because every purchase funds meals and other necessities for dogs in need. The GOODS Program, a pet food distribution initiative in the Greater Good Charities family, has been keeping hungry bellies full for over a decade. And to date, the GOODS program has delivered over 578 million meals to shelters and rescues across the country. That’s more than 6,000 truckloads delivered to hungry animals!

These much-needed donations help initiatives like Feeding the Pets of Tulsa’s Homeless serve the needs of homeless citizens’ pets. The Tulsa chapter of Feeding The Pets of Homeless began when two Tulsa Animal Welfare Officers saw a need in their community and decided to be the ones to step in and offer assistance to these much-loved companions.

“Because of the help we receive from the GOODS Program, these precious fur babies are guaranteed to have access to healthy pet food on a weekly basis,” Feeding the Pets of Tulsa’s Homeless explains. “They don’t have to worry about how to feed their pet companions.”

“We are able to keep up with the need from the growing homeless community and reach out to many more needy pets.”

And the food donations all free up funds to provide other necessities.

“We also provide harnesses, collars, leashes, pet coats and blankets, pet beds, feeding bowls and other supplies as contributions allow.”

“Having access to pet food from the Goods Program helps us to afford these other items.”
