It was just another day on the job for The Roadway Inn GM Ben Duke. He was minding his own business in the Greenville, NC hotel when he saw a familiar guest and his dog Boo Boo head into the elevator to go to their room. What happened next took everyone by surprise and if it weren’t for Duke leaping into action, the outcome may have been devastating.

Boo Boo had wandered to the end of his leash outside of the elevator when the doors closed and it started moving. The poor dog was quickly being pulled by his leash toward the elevator doors as it moved down in its shaft. If nothing else, Boo Boo was soon to die of strangulation, so Duke immediately leapt to his feet to save the pup. He managed to unleash him and although it seems like a small action, it saved Boo Boo’s life. The poor pooch was horrified and scratched Duke’s face badly, but Duke says he doesn’t blame the small dog one bit. Shortly after, his owner came running upstairs to get his pup and was shedding tears of fear and joy that the outcome was a positive one. “He was crying and was so grateful” Duke told WYFF4. “He just came up and hugged me. It was pretty crazy.”

Thankfully, this miraculous action was caught on the hotel’s security cameras. Although Duke claims he was only doing his job that day, we can’t thank him enough for his immediate attention to such a dire situation. He saved Boo Boo’s life that day and in turn, saved his guest from losing his faithful companion. “Everybody is calling me a hero, but I can’t imagine the other outcome,” Duke said. “I just did what you are supposed to do in this situation.” Well, we still think Duke is a hero and we certainly hope that others would do the same thing.
