Those unforgettable journeys are once again taking center stage as PEOPLE launches the ninth annual World’s Cutest Rescue Dog Contest Presented by the PEDIGREE® brand. The beloved competition celebrates adopted dogs from every background by giving families the opportunity to share heartfelt stories, meaningful memories, and charming photos that showcase not only their pets’ unique personalities but also the life-changing bond that rescue animals create with the people who welcomed them into their forever families.
The 2026 competition opened on July 1 and invites families to share the inspiring stories and unforgettable personalities of the rescue dogs that changed their lives. More than a simple photo contest, the annual event honors the powerful bond between adopted pets and the people who welcomed them home, while also recognizing the shelters and rescue organizations that make these life-changing connections possible.
Last year’s winner, Bastian, captured hearts with a remarkable rescue story tied to Hurricane Florence. The lovable rat terrier mix also amazed judges with his ability to communicate using more than 100 programmable buttons, making him a standout champion. This year, another extraordinary rescue dog will have the opportunity to follow in his paw prints.
Celebrating Incredible Rescue Stories
The contest is open to adopted dogs of every breed, age, and size. Whether a dog overcame difficult circumstances, found a loving family after years in a shelter, or simply brings endless joy to those around them, every rescue has a unique story that deserves recognition.
Pet parents are encouraged to submit a favorite photo that truly captures their dog’s personality. Along with the image, owners should share their pet’s adoption journey and explain how their furry companion has made a lasting impact on their family.
Judges will also look for stories that highlight the dedicated shelters and rescue groups that helped give these deserving dogs a second chance. These organizations often work tirelessly behind the scenes to provide medical care, rehabilitation, and hope before matching animals with loving homes.
Submissions will remain open through July 24, giving rescue families several weeks to showcase the dogs that have transformed their lives with loyalty, resilience, and affection.
After the submission period ends, PEOPLE editors will review thousands of entries before selecting 10 finalists. The number of submissions has continued to grow in recent years, reflecting just how many remarkable rescue stories are waiting to be shared.
Beginning on August 17, readers will have the opportunity to vote for their favorite finalists. Public voting will narrow the field to three outstanding dogs before the contest closes on Sept. 28.
From those three finalists, a panel of judges representing PEOPLE and the PEDIGREE® brand will choose the grand prize winner, who will be officially announced in October.
The winning rescue dog will receive an unforgettable prize package that includes a professional photo shoot, a feature in PEOPLE Magazine and on People.com, a year’s supply of dog food from the PEDIGREE® brand, and a $1,000 donation to the animal rescue organization of the winner’s choice.
While only one dog will earn the title of World’s Cutest Rescue Dog, the contest shines a spotlight on something even more meaningful. Every adopted pet represents a story of resilience, compassion, and new beginnings. Behind each smiling face is a journey that reminds us how powerful love, patience, and second chances can be.
