The Surprising Reason Your Dog Could Be Gaining Weight

| September 18, 2017

Obesity is as big of a problem for our pets as it is for us. They can suffer from many of the same weight-related issues that we do that can reduce their length and quality of life. So you know you need to watch your dog’s weight to help them stay healthy and happy. What if your dog starts gaining weight and you aren’t sure why?

If you haven’t changed their diet, the next thing to look at is their exercise habits. Have you noticed them slowing down on your walks together? Maybe they don’t run around the dog park or back yard as much as they used to. Are they spending less time playing? Maybe they’re just a little slower getting out of bed every morning.

These could all be symptoms of joint pain. If your dog is favoring one leg in particular, a vet should determine the exact cause of your dog’s pain, but many dogs deal with age-related arthritis and general joint pain.

What can you do to help?

Canine joint chews are a tasty way to support normal joint function, flexibility, and healthy joint cartilage. The most popular nutrients in these chews include glucosamine, MSM, and chondroitin. More recently, some brands have begun including turmeric which has long been known for its anti-inflammatory properties.

At what age should I consider adding supplements?

The answer to this question greatly depends on your dog’s size, breed, and propensity towards joint problems such as arthritis and hip dysplasia. In general, the larger your dog, the earlier they are likely to need supplementation. If your dog’s breed is any that are listed here, veterinarians may recommend supplementation as early as 12 months old. For other breeds, most begin supplementation as a dog nears their senior years, between 5-10 years old.

If supplementation makes sense for your dog, we’d encourage you to research our popular Advanced Hip & Joint Chews with Glucosamine, MSM, Chondroitin, and Organic Turmeric.
