Sometimes, it takes a radical action to get people’s attention.
Whitney Steele, Director of Volunteers and Events of Arizona Animal Welfare League & SPCA, came up with a brilliant idea to capture people’s attention and help find their longest resident a home.
Lana is a 4-year-old Bullmastiff mix. She was found as a stray, but it wasn’t long until she found a home. That was three years ago. Now, Lana is back in the shelter. She was happy living in her previous home, but she was returned to the shelter four months ago.
Lana is so smart that when she wants to play in the sprinklers, she brings it to you and sets it up! Smart is this girl’s middle name. Lana is being sponsored by Crowne Plaza Phoenix Airport!

Whitney felt sorry for poor Lana. She had gotten used to having a family, and now that she’s back in the shelter, it’s hard for her. So Whitney thought of something radical but brilliant to catch people’s attention and help find Lana a home.
At least one of us is working!

Whitney staged a sit-in. She vowed to live in Lana’s kennel for 24 hours, 7 days a week, until Lana got adopted. This was no joke. Whitney was determined to find this poor girl a home. And by living inside the kennel, she also wanted to understand what shelter dogs go through every day.
Whitney had to do her job and hold her meetings around Lana’s kennel. And even if the shelter was closed, Whitney had to stay there and sleep in a dog bed beside Lana.
When your roomie wants to PAR-TAY and you just wanna sleep. (Seriously…its 9:30 and she is out)

After spending just one day with Lana, Whitney realized how lonely it was for her. After not going home for a night, Whitney already missed her family, her home. Imagine just how lonely it must be for Lana who had been returned to the shelter after having a family and a home for three years.
Thankfully, a lot of people showed their support and appreciation for the cause.
Talk about awesome champions! Crowne Plaza Phoenix Airport brought Lana, Whitney, and the people helping with the sit in…

Local businesses even sent Whitney and Lana some food!
Thank you Fired Pie on University for graciously donating pizza to our hungry girls during our sit in to get Lana adopted! #freelana

With every hour that Whitney spent with Lana, she became more determined to find Lana a forever home. She wanted people to see just how amazing Lana is. She knew the pup deserved a second chance.
Lana LOVES treats, can you tell?
