Myers adopted his 6-year-old German shepherd, Sadie, from the Ramapo-Bergen Animal Refuge in New Jersey. Sadie’s journey to finding a home was not easy. She had been surrendered to the shelter, and her anxious demeanor around men, coupled with her defensiveness, made it challenging for the shelter staff to place her.
“She was initially quite standoffish and unsure of her surroundings,” Heather Centrella, the front office manager at Ramapo-Bergen Animal Refuge, shared with The Dodo. “She became somewhat withdrawn at the shelter, so we knew she needed an experienced and patient home.”
Despite her nervousness, Myers saw something special in Sadie. It took only 30 minutes for him to decide to bring her home. Remarkably, the issues she was supposed to have with men seemed to melt away in his presence.
Myers and Sadie quickly formed a strong bond. She became an integral part of his life, and their daily routines were filled with mutual affection and trust. Myers had no inkling that this bond would soon become a lifeline for him.
One typical evening, while relaxing at home, Myers experienced a sudden and debilitating stroke. He lost all sensation on his left side and collapsed between his bed and the wall. The situation was dire, and Myers found himself in a terrifying predicament.
“It was terrifying—I couldn’t move and didn’t realize I had a stroke,” Myers recounted. “My cellphone was on the dresser about 15 feet away, but I couldn’t reach it.”
In this critical moment, Sadie sprang into action. She instinctively knew something was wrong and began licking Myers’ face to revive him. When that didn’t work, she refused to leave his side and started barking loudly, hoping to alert the neighbors.
Myers, in a desperate attempt, reached out and grabbed Sadie’s collar. To his amazement, Sadie used all her strength to drag him across the room, closer to his phone.
“She wasn’t trained as a service dog, but she sensed my distress and knew I needed help,” Myers explained. “I don’t know how she did it, but she understood.”
Thanks to Sadie’s quick thinking and determination, Myers was able to reach his phone and call for help. When emergency responders arrived, they were in awe of Sadie’s actions. The doctors at the hospital confirmed that Sadie’s efforts were likely responsible for saving Myers’ life.
While Myers was hospitalized and undergoing rehabilitation, Sadie was cared for by his family. Despite the separation, their bond remained unbroken. They stayed in touch through FaceTime, though Sadie found it confusing and often cried, longing to be with her dad.
“They do FaceTime, which he said she’s a little confused by because she wants to get at her dad and she cries,” Centrella said. “But he reassures her that he’s doing everything he can to get home to her as soon as possible so they can be reunited.”
Finally, the day came when Myers was well enough to return home. The reunion between Myers and Sadie was nothing short of joyous. As Myers walked through the door, tears filled his eyes. Sadie, overcome with excitement, leapt into his arms and showered him with kisses, her tail wagging furiously.
