1,300 Shelter Dogs Have Free Roam Of A Tropical Paradise Known As “Land Of The Strays”

| May 26, 2016

Usually when we hear the word shelter, we imagine dozens of dreary kennels packed with barking dogs. While most shelters also have a play area where the pups can stretch their legs, this Costa Rican facility is totally different.

Welcome to the Territorio De Zaguates, also known as the Land of Strays — a no-kill shelter where over 1,300 homeless dogs run free across lush green hills. It’s basically a wonderland for homeless dogs!

At Territorio de Zaguates, most of the dogs are sweet, adorable mutts. In order to break the stereotype that mixed breeds are somehow less valuable than their purebred cousins, the staff celebrate each dog for their uniqueness.

Instead of Doberman mixes and Cocker crosses, Land of the Strays is home to “Chubby-Tailed German Dobernauzers” and “Fire-Tailed Border Cockers.”

This place is like absolute heaven for dog lovers! Visitors are welcome to run, snuggle and interact with the dogs. Best of all, since all the pups are up for adoption, you can take one (or two) home!

Alvaro Saumet and Lya Battle are the fabulous couple who own and operate Territorio de Zaguates. They have three main goals for their shelter:
  1. Rescue and improve the quality of life of Costa Rican street dogs.
  2. Promote the adoption of animals rescued by the organization.
  3. Reduce the number of stray dogs on the streets by spaying and neutering all dogs we have rescued, and raising awareness about responsible pet ownership and care.
