I’ve been reading up on both the English Toy Spaniel and Pekingese breeds.

*To owners of either, I am wondering (in your experience/opinion)*, …

      1) which sheds more? (I’ve read they both shed a fair amount),

      &

      2) which is heavier in weight?

** I had a back injury when I was younger so I am not supposed to lift more than about 10 lbs (max). (I have no other physical limitations of any kind. I just have to be careful when it comes to lifting anything too heavy).**

From what I’ve read both breeds could be possible candidates in terms of weight range, (although I’m aware it can vary from one individual dog to another.)

But I still would love to hear any honest opinions or insight from owners in terms of (weight) & shedding.

P.S. – I am NOT a first-time dog owner. I just am not experienced with either of these two specific breeds. I have no children or other pets, I work from home (my apt) and there is a very nice park just down the street from me (dog-friendly). After reading up on each of these breeds, both sound like really great little dogs. I would just love to hear some real-life feedback from owners of either of these. Thank you for reading!

I own an English toy Spaniel and she is an 11 year old rescue. I had never seen or heard of an English Toy before I got Roxy. I was looking for a Cavalier King Charles at the time, but none were available in rescue so I went for the cousin which was originally called a King Charles (not the Cavalier version). She fluctuates between 13 and 14 pounds no matter how much she eats. She has had very few health problems despite her closed face. I did learn that her breed was no longer allowed in baggage compartments on airplanes because of her closed face. This also applies to the Pekingese. She is not a lap dog, but she loves to sleep next to me at night. Because of her closed face her tongue hangs out to the supine most of the time. This makes it a bit difficult to eat from a bowl so I find it easier and less messy just to hand feed her the raw food. I love her with ll my heart and she just makes me smile when I look at her with that tongue hanging out.

I have had two pekinese but I’m afraid of getting another. The last one had a very big nosebridge (a racial mark which makes the dog “beautiful”) but the hairs on it grew into her eyes and made her almost blind. I realised that too late but then we had her operated and the nosebridge taken away. She was not beautiful in the eyes of the breeders but she did not have any more pain.
Both the toy spaniel and the pekinese have very short noses which can make them very breathless. So whatever dog you choose, check eyes and nose very well. My pekinese were never more than 5 kg – don’t know how much that is in LB.
