Is it safe? Is it effective? What’s the recommended dose?

I wish I knew the direct answer however there is an over the counter medication that I had to use on my dachshund when I had to keep him calm after surgery. It is caled NaturVet Aches & Discomfort Calming Aid. It comes in tablets and it includes 126 mcg of Melatonin along with other calming ingredients. So I do know that dogs can have Melatonin however I’m not sure what 126 mcg equals out to. The medicine can be found in Petco so maybe they can give you a better answer than I can. I hope this helps. Good luck:)

I have an Aussie/Border Collie mix that weighs about 47 pounds. She is terrified of thunder & lightening, & fireworks. Our vet recommended 3 to 6 mg of melatonin to clam her. He said I can give it every few hours. The 3 mg usually works fine, but if she is really upset, I will give her 3 mg more; and that really does the trick.
