Hi all – I’m really new here but not new to doxies – of my 5 dogs I have two mini dachshunds that are 12 and 10 1/2 yrs old.

My 10 1/2 yr old is overweight – I know he is and I’ve tried so hard to help him lose weight but it’s just not coming off. I want to know at what point I should really start being concerned and second questions – he has a couple of “lumps” around his belly – they’re moveable (my older doxie had fat deposits that my vet said were normal but this is different). Honestly, I’m terrified to take him to the vet to find out that something is really wrong with him. My dogs are my life and the thought of losing him kills me. He seems so happy. In July I rescued a senior husky and 3 weeks later he crossed the rainbow bridge and it totally broke my heart so I’m really afraid for my Zeusy.

      Any suggestions? Experiences? Comments??
(the pic was his 10th birthday – the cake was for us humans, not him… he got his favorite treats!)

      Thanks in Advance!

LeAnn, My Doxie was starting to get overweight about 5 years old. It was mainly from kids feeding all sort of table scraps. Once his diet became more disiplined, the weight came off
He is quite active even now st 15 years had started to slow doen. Plenty of bursts of excitement energy, and I will encourage it even to go outside for continues play.
He developed those fat lumps. One large one on the inside front leg on chest. Vet said as long as they don’t become an issue with interfere w/ leg movement its fine and hsrmless. I would notice that if he eats fatty foods from snitch ing or others feeding it will grow. Back to a disiplined diet and would shrink. Your dog’s are the world to you, I wouldn’t pass on a vet visit for those firmer chest, abdomen lumps though. They could be more serious than jus fatty tissue

      LeAnn…they just love food
My doxie has had a lump for years, it’s soft and movable, the vet said make sure it doesn’t get firm and larger.
As for the diet-all the expensive special food didn’t work.
I started making my own: for 2 dogs / 11 days:(8) chicken breasts, baked w/ cinnamon & ground to a rice like consistency; (1) each of frozen veggies
(peas/carrots, spinach, broccoli, squash & green beans); (1) can of beans (black/ pinto or cannelli). I toss it all together and freeze half (chicken doesn’t last 11 days). My babies lost (4) pounds each within 6 months. It’s about $18 a batch, which is less than the Vet’s recommended food.
I am very picky about their treats: made in the USA / no wheat, corn or soy / organic.
      respectively submitted,
      Sandi
