Hello! We rescued a shy and fearful Border Collie in June. The shelter that rescued her described the situation as “deplorable”. I can’t even imagine how someone could do that but that’s a whole other topic… Anyways, she was in a hoarding situation and she is fantastic with other dogs. She has made HUGE strides since June but she is definitely still cautious. She is smart as a whistle so we know that she understands that we love her but she just can’t help it.

Her main issue right now is when we are standing up. She won’t get close enough for us to pet her. If we are sitting down, she comes right up and will even jump on our laps to play. I am looking for tips on how to help her feel more comfortable to approach us when we are standing up.

Any other advice for shy and fearful dogs would be greatly appreciated as well! TIA

It sounds like she’s made huge progress since you adopted her – hooray for you for giving her the time and support she needs! Might treats help? Perhaps if she associates standing humans with her most favoritest treat she might be a bit more willing to come closer? Good luck – you’re both doing great!

You might also try sitting down & having her come to you then standing while she’s still there. Do it slowly w/a lot of treats and happy noises.

I would sit on the floor, making yourself as small as possible. Wait for he come to you, avoid eye contact if necessary. Feed her something like jerky, or a piece of cheese or turkey dog. Do this is several places. Try to make a game of it. When she catches on,
sit with the top of your shoes on the floor, then sit on your heels. you will only be slightly taller. then sit tall on your knees. Make certain that she can do without an fear. Then the awful part where you have to be in the squat position, the work your way up to a stand. Do each step in many different places before adding another level of difficulty.

There is a good website out there for shy and fearful dogs – fearfuldogs.com.
