      Hi Everyone!

I am newbie here and I would love to share my thoughts and hear yours too. 🙂
I just want to share the story of my Labrador pup who just recently died due to Parvo. Geez..That disease again.
It happened last January. Everything is perfectly fine. My pup is in its usual hyperactive mode, playing around and running back and forth.
Our house helper noticed that there is a yellowish vomit in my pup’s resting place. We though it’s just a gastric problem and it would eventually pass. However, the following day, my pup seems to be a little passive. When we offered him his favorite beef chunks, he just nibbled a few and laid down again. That raised an alarm in me. Something is not right because my dog would never ignore his fav beef chunks. He usually has a big appetite just like with adults even though he’s still a pup.
We observed him and we also checked if he’s drinking water.(Mind you..he drinks like a human).
That time he didn’t drink water and would just lie down. I was convinced that he needs to seek medical attention.
We brought him to the vet and they measured his temperature. He was with a high-grade fever. The vet injected him antipyretic and gave had some blood chemistry. She said we need to check if he has an infection.
She injected him with antibiotics and advised us to come back the next for another shot and for the result of the blood chem.
When we brought him home, he still doesn’t have an appetite but I tried to feed him the A/D given by the vet.
I fed him with my hands and I used the syringe for his water.
The following day, we visited the vet again and had the results. He has high infection rate and his platelets are low. The normal is 200 but he only had 80.
The doctor already concluded that it is parvo. We decided for him to be admitted to the animal clinic. They inserted IV fluids on him since he is not eating and drinking.
The doctor also gave him stronger antibiotics. She told us that it would be a hard battle because the survival for Parvo is just minimal. But I would never give up on my dog. I told her to do everything she can to save him.
She honestly told us that it is a critical stage for my pup. Platelets low and his body won’t accept the deworming pill.
I was so worried and kept on praying that he would survive. In that instance, money is never an issue. I just want him to be saved.
Evry now and then, the vet updates us with his status. My pup started vomiting foamy saliva. The next day, she pooped blood in the morning. There is hardly ever a fecal matter according to the vet. It was bright red. My pup is becoming weaker. We rushed to the animal clinic to visit him. When he saw us, he managed to lift his body and wagged his tail. His eyes were telling me that he wants to come home with us.
Poor thing. I cuddled him and assured him that we’re going to be there every day and he needs to hold on.
The following day, the vet sent me a message that my pup pooped blood again and he was very weak.
When I was reading the message, I felt a pang of terror. I was so afraid whether he would survive or not. Then, the worst came. The vet called me to say that my pup didn’t make it. He died 20 minutes after pooping blood.
For a second, I cannot believe what I have heard. All my hopes that my dog will recover suddenly crashed.
How can it be? He is in the care of a professional so how come he still died? He didn’t even get to see my before he died.
The vet told us that it’s the loss of blood that killed him.
We buried my pup near our home so we can visit him.
      He would never be forgotten.
Anyone here who’ve got the same story of their dog’s battle with parvo?

I am really sorry to hear that, it is heartbreaking.

I haven’t encounter it yet, the only question that I have in mind is why did your puppy flashes some blood everytime he poops? Did you vet explain it to you? Is it because of too much medicines? I believe that the overuse of antibiotics can lead into a much more serious disease.

        Hi andimaldita,

yes, it’s such a heartbreak, but more of good memories as well 🙂
According to the vet parvo’s common symptom is bloody diarrhea.
We checked on the meds they gave him. According to her, a fast-acting antibiotic is needed to fight off the infection and to avoid secondary infection.
Her bloody stool only happened twice and with almost 24 hour gap. That’s why it’s been a shock for me to have lost him within just two days.

I am so sorry to hear about your beloved puppy dying of parvo. I have not personally had this experience, but friends of mine almost did. They didn’t realize that the “rescue” where they adopted their puppy was actually a puppy mill. Their puppy got very sick and had symptoms very similar to yours. They were much more fortunate in that their puppy did survive and is happy and healthy now. But, I just want to make sure that everyone reading this knows how important it is to get your new puppies and dogs from reputable breeders, or, even better, from real shelters. Animals from puppy mills will almost always be sick due to the conditions they are kept in while waiting to be sold.

Anyway, again, I am very sorry for your loss and hope you will consider rescuing another puppy when you are up to it.

      Take good care!

        Hi andreamcloy,

        Really appreciate your comforting words.
I think you are perfectly right.
        Learned my lesson.
Parvo is undetectable in early phase and some dogs won’t show any symptoms at all.
It just so happen when my pup got that disease, he’s still not yet done with his vaccines. He only two shots and was scheduled for the fourth, and then this situation happened.
Lucky for the pup that survived. I think he really put a good fight. Just happy to know that there is really hope to survive if it is detected early and properly treated 🙂
