Last November, a horribly abused dog was brought to a New York City shelter, emaciated and practically hairless. Covered in dirt and feces, he had severe wounds all over his body that medical professionals believe to be the result of battery acid. He also had a broken front leg and several visible cigarette burns.

“His front leg was so horrible that I didn’t photograph it,” Courtney Bellew, director of the Northeast chapter of Special Needs Animal Rescue Rehabilitation, which cares for critically injured animals., told The Huffington Post , which first reported on Rudy.

Bellow recalls that the traumatized boy wasn’t doing well emotionally either – “He ducked his head in fear whenever I would go to touch him,” she said, “but was so grateful I was there and showing him a kind hand. I was truly shocked and heartbroken.”

Though Ruby isn’t yet ready to be put up for adoption, he is enjoying his current foster home, a New England farm house filled with lots of other dogs, some barn animals, and a family of loving humans who are eager to help this sweet boy feel safe and happy again.

As you can see below, the folks at SNARR often treat Ruby to lavender-infused baths. But this isn’t just a well-deserved spa treatment…it serves a medical purpose in helping to repair Ruby’s severely damaged, sensitive skin.
