In a remarkable display of bravery and quick thinking, a Suffolk County police officer performed a daring rescue, saving three dogs trapped inside a home engulfed in flames on Sunday evening. The dramatic incident took place on Magnolia Drive in Rocky Point, just after 5 p.m., and highlighted the extraordinary courage of Officer Matthew Ingui. His swift actions and commitment to preserving life under harrowing conditions underscore the dedication of first responders who routinely put themselves in harm’s way to protect both human and animal lives.

When Officer Ingui arrived at the scene, he was informed by bystanders that no humans were inside the burning house, but three dogs were still trapped. The urgency of the situation left no time to lose. Demonstrating his commitment to saving lives, Ingui immediately took action. He quickly located a window, removed the screen, and climbed into the smoke-filled home.

“The dogs were on the couch, looking visibly distressed as the smoke started to fill the room,” Ingui recounted the following day. “I have three dogs myself. I treated them as if they were my own, determined to ensure their safety.”

Inside the house, conditions were deteriorating rapidly. Smoke was thickening, making it increasingly difficult to see and breathe. Ingui’s eyes began to burn from the intensity of the smoke, but his resolve did not waver. He carefully picked up the dogs, one by one, and carried them to the window. With the assistance of a quick-thinking neighbor, he was able to pass the dogs through to safety.

One of the dogs, terrified by the chaos, was initially resistant and almost bit Ingui. However, his calm demeanor and determination prevailed, and he successfully got all three dogs out safely.

Meanwhile, the residents of the home, who were not present at the time of the fire, arrived shortly after the rescue. Kim Hoffman, the dogs’ owner, arrived at the scene in a state of panic. Her primary concern was for her pets’ well-being.

“She walked up in tears, the first thing she said was, ‘Where are my dogs?'” Ingui recalled. “I reassured her that the neighbor had them and they were all safe.”

This remarkable rescue is not the first time Officer Ingui has come to the aid of animals in distress. A few months prior, he had saved a cat from another house fire, also in Rocky Point. In that instance, the home was fully engulfed in flames when he arrived.

“The homeowner told me her cat was still inside,” Ingui said. “I entered the burning house and found the cat hiding underneath the bed. I was able to get it out safely.”

Officer Ingui’s actions highlight the dedication and bravery of law enforcement officers who go above and beyond to protect all lives, both human and animal. His selfless efforts serve as a testament to the commitment of first responders who face dangerous situations to ensure the safety of others.

“It’s part of the job,” Ingui humbly stated. “This is what we do. We’re just here to preserve all life.”

As for the cause of the fire on Magnolia Drive, it is currently not believed to be of criminal origin. The investigation is ongoing, but the primary focus remains on the miraculous rescue and the safety of the pets involved.

Officer Ingui’s heroic actions have undoubtedly left a lasting impact on the Rocky Point community, showcasing the extraordinary measures taken by police officers in the line of duty. His willingness to risk his own safety to save the lives of three dogs is a powerful reminder of the bravery and dedication inherent in those who serve and protect.
