As humans we often feel that every dog should love other dogs – after all, they’re dogs! However, there are several breeds that actually prefer human company to other canines. If you are looking for a dog that will choose you over a romp in the dog park, you may want to consider one of these. (Of course, there are exceptions to anything and every dog has his own personality dependent on breeding, training and socialization.)
#1 – French Bulldog
The happy-go-lucky Frenchie gets along with everyone, but given the choice, many of them would choose to hang with their owner and his closest friends over running around the dog park.
#2 – Shetland Sheepdog
Although shy with strangers, the sheltie is devoted and loving to her owners. They are often called “breed snobs” because they if they tolerate the company of other dogs, they seem to recognize (and prefer!) their own breed.
#3 – Great Dane
It’s not that they don’t like other dogs, it’s just they LOVE people! An overgrown lap dog, the Dane would definitely be fine spending all day with his person.

#4 – Collie
The collie, like the sheltie, is a devoted family dog; many of them would rather spend the day watching over their “flock” (human family), than romping around with strange dogs.
#5 – Italian Greyhound
These little guys may have been bred for racing but they think they are a lap dog! They would spend the day in your lap without a second thought. (No need to share you with another canine!)
#6 – Australian Cattle Dogs
Like many herding dogs, the cattle dog prefer his owner to other dogs. Maybe because they were bred to work so closely with humans.
#7 – Poodle
Poodle (regardless of size) are a devoted dog and a good guardian of the home. They definitely prefer their family over other dogs.
#8 – Cavalier King Charles Spaniel
Bred to be a lap dog, it makes sense that these dogs would prefer human company to other dogs.
#9 – Pug
Although breeding is not everything, the pug was bred to be a human companion and most of them definitely live up to the stereotype.
#10 – Maltese
Another lap dog, the Maltese is quite content to stay on your lap watching the other dogs in action, rather than being part of it.
#11 – Chihuahuas
This tenacious breed has a wider range of personality traits than many other breeds. While some Chihuahuas love to play with other dogs, many only “tolerate” others (and like the sheltie seems to prefer their own breed) and prefer human companionship.
#12 –German Shepherd Dog
Bred to tend the sheep with just his owner for company, it’s not a surprise that many GSDs prefer their people over other dogs.
#13 – American Pit Bull Terrier
This loving dog is all about his family. They don’t care if you skip the dog park, just as long as they are getting love and attention from humans.
#14 –Shiba Inu
This breed can be reserved with humans and dogs alike, but given the choice, they will choose their human over another dog. They are often seen standing and observing the action at a doggy daycare rather than joining in. (too dignified perhaps?)
#15 – Pomeranians
Bred down from larger sled dogs in the Spitz family to be a companion dog, Pomeranians definitely love people. In fact, many owners say they had to work at socializing them with other dogs when they were young.
