13 Easy Money-Saving Hacks For Dog Owners

| August 30, 2015

A recent study showed the average dog owner spends close to $3,000 a year on each dog. I bet many of us spend a lot more than that on our dogs, treating them better than we do ourselves. If that’s you, then you are going to love the following hacks, which will help you save money while still spoiling your dog.

#1 – Dilute shampoos

Did you know that almost all dog shampoos/conditioners are made to be diluted? That means you’re throwing money away if you are simply putting it in your hands and directly on the dog. Instead, go to a dollar store, get a pitcher, and start diluting your shampoo and conditioner. It will save you a ton!

#2 – Turn old clothes into new beds

Take your old jeans, sweatshirts, t-shirts, etc., and rather than throwing them out, turn them into fun dog beds. You can even stuff them with other old clothing for a practically free bed – all you have to pay for is the needle and thread! Watch a how-to video here.

#3 – Frequent Buyer Cards

I know, who wants another card? But when it comes to dog products, having membership cards to the places you shop is worth it for the coupons and savings. Also, check with the pet food company that makes your dog’s food– many of them have frequent buyer programs where you can get your 10th bag free, or give you a dollar off amount for every $50 spent. Whatever if it is, it’s worth it since you have to buy dog food, anyway!

#8 – Car Insurance

Ever wondered if your dog is covered in the event of a car accident? In most cases, no! However some car insurance companies, such as Progressive, have programs that will cover your dog’s vet bills, which could save you thousands.

#9 – Store Food Correctly

Don’t waste money by throwing away old dog food or treats. Keep both in air-tight containers inside your home. Food and treats that get too hot outside or in the garage go bad quickly, and the food is more likely to get bugs or mice if left outside.

#10 – Trim nails yourself

It’s not too hard to learn how to trim your own dog’s nails, and it will save you money at the vet or groomer. Ask someone knowledgeable to show you; you will be surprised at how easy it is.

#13 – Dehydrator

While you do have to pay for the initial dehydrator, after that you can make your dog all kinds of treats at a fraction of the cost. I find that for most treats, it costs me less than half of what they charge at the pet store. I own an Excalibur dehydrator and love it.
