25 Best Dog Foods for a German Shepherd with Chronic Kidney Disease

My granddaughter had some old baby cereal the kids had outgrown. I took it and mix it in with my dogs food. I was really surprised at how much more energy and playfulness has returned to them. they’re all in their mid teens so I just thought they were getting old. They’re all running around like puppies.

Try a fresh food diet. Dr. PITCAIRN’S BOOKS have recipes for everything. He put a book out in 90s. Saved my mother from dialysis using his principles. Cleaver tea helps with kidney function in dogs. My sister used it on her German Shepherd. One handful in drip coffee maker. Same recipe on my 71 year old mother. You can find it online. Best wished, I’ve had kidney stones, hurt passing. Tea helps. Have given to cats for bladder problems.

Well, I’m having the same issue only with her liver. We feed her liver, she gets better. Maybe get some kidney and cook that up for her? I’ve noticed, almost all illnesses are from foods that are supposed to be good for them… I gave up and just cook for them now. Today’s menu is Boiled chicken, oatmeal and yogurt. They seem to love it and these girls are FUSSY. One of my girls has a constant yeast infection that the yogurt seems to help, and one has issues with constipation, oatmeal. Boiled chicken is a good meat and the dark meat has the right amount of fat for them. They need fat in their diets but not as much as they put in the canned dog food I’ve seen…. At this point, if I won’t eat it, I’m not feeding to them either.

Consult with vet. Go online and find a recipe for a LOW PROTEIN diet. Run it by vet. My first GSD had bad kidneys and I remember feeding rice, boiled burger, hard boiled egg – can’t remember ratio. Some of these well meaning suggestions given here will NOT be good for your dog’s kidneys. Choose several homemade low protein options and run them by your vet. Yes I’ve said that 3 times because it is important!

Try Dr. Harvey’s. Look them up, and you can actually talk to them. My GSD’s kidney numbers were off the charts, so I researched and switched her to their food. Her numbers went back to normal and my vet was in disbelief! You rehydrate their Canine Health, and add the protein. Easy, if you don’t mind adding the chicken or beef or other protein…And I am not a paid sponsor of the food, just a satisfied customer, who’d like to help other dogs. Worked for me!

My GSD hasn’t got kidney problems but I would never give my dog that incinerated kibble stuff or anything a vet would recommend. My GSD is fed a Raw Diet….ie meat, bone and offal. The kind of stuff a dog was meant to be fed on. Never seen a wild fox or wolf go to supermarket for a bag of that kibble crap.

Boiled chicken shredded. Avocado or coconut oil. Bone broth beef broth or chicken broth. Choose whichever one and add it to the kibble.they will eat it. A dog will never starve itself. It takes time but they will eat.

Have you tried weaning him from his normal food to the vet recommended one? Just start out with mostly his food, and add in some of the other, slowly over several weeks add in more of the Vet recommended one and less of his normal food. Eventually he will be eating the one the Vet recommended. May not work, but worth a shot, hope you GSD feels better.

My 3 year old have heart disease (cardiomyopathy) and chronic kidney disease. so i am very careful with her diet as its utmost important for me to ensure her kidney is good to support her heart function. She is on renal diet one time (Drools vet pro renal) and evening she will have little rice with very less boiled chicken (100gms only) and veggies. cut your protein to as less as possible, that’s the rule. you can expect the growth to be slow (100gms chicken is nothing for a gsd’s muscle tone) but that has kept her creatinine level in control and that’s all matters. The one on the right is my Kiara she turned 3 last week. the left one is Ray, he is 7.

Did you have or have you given your Dog Rimadyl? If so, please comment here as it probably is not a kidney disease. Look up and research Rimadyl poisoning in dogs and what vets are trained to do if your dog has been poisoned by the prescribed drug.I had a dog who had diagnosed a kidney/liver disease by the same vet who prescribed and poisoned him.3 class actions suits against Pfizer for this very thing as they were the ones training and telling the vets to do this instead of treating the dog that had been poisoned.Sound horrific But…. It is true Rimadyl helps a lot of pets. It also kills many and they cover it up FACT

My dog was in full kidney failure, I started making homemade food using chicken and rice as a base and loaded it with fresh veggies. She went from starving herself by not eating the vet food to an active happy girl. I believe it gave her an extra 3 years of life.
