Dachshunds have been a popular household pet for decades, currently ranked 13th in popularity by the American Kennel Club based on their registration numbers. Owning a Doxie is fun and challenging. Though they are a small dog, they have a big dog personality, which can get them into trouble. They definitely have some unique care instructions that go along with them as well. The following are three things all Dachshund Owners should know.
#1 – Treat Their Back With Care
Probably one of the most important things is to be aware of the fragility of that long Doxie spine. Dachshunds can easily suffer from a variety of back problems. Something as simple as jumping off the couch, taking a corner too quickly, or going up and down stairs is enough to cause damage. And some of them have genetic spine diseases that will cause problems no matter how careful you are, so getting your Doxie’s spine checked out regularly to catch any problems as early as possible is a must.
#2 – They Are Energetic
Though they are a small dog, Dachshund think of themselves as big, tough hunters. While they love snuggle time, this is usually only after they have run around, barked, and ripped something to shreds. Every Doxie owner should understand that their Dachshund needs exercise, otherwise behavior issues can arise.
#3 – Proper Socialization Is Imperative
Dachshunds have gotten a bad rap over the years as barkers and biters. While a lot of barking in the home comes from boredom (see above), barking at other dogs or people in public places can be caused by lack of proper socialization when they were younger. Doxies definitely need proper socialization to make sure they grow up confident and friendly.
