3 Things All Pug Owners Should Know

| February 18, 2017

Pugs are a very popular breed because of their sweet personality, size, and willingness to get along with other animals and kids. Like all dogs, Pugs need basic care – food, water, attention, training, and love. While they are not the highest maintenance dog breed, they do have a few special things that you will be required to take care of as an owner of a Pug. The following are three things all Pug owners should know.

#1 – They Shed Constantly

I don’t know how many times as a dog trainer someone has said to me, “I want a short-haired dog because I don’t want all the hair around my house.” Well, Pugs are a double-coated breed and they shed year round. And those small, needle-like hairs get everywhere. They needle into the fibers of couches, car seats, etc., and are almost impossible to get out. So, it’s something to think about if you wondering if the Pug is for you.

#2 – Their Wrinkles Need Care

Those adorable wrinkles by their nose mean maintenance. Bacteria can easily start to grow in them and cause infections if they are not kept clean and dry. They should be cleaned after eating and dried out when your Pug gets wet.

#3 – They Become Overweight Easily

Pugs have a tendency to gain weight easily, which is not good for them. Not only does it put stress on their organs and joints, but it makes it even harder for them to breath – something that is already a challenge for this breed. So, be sure you keep your Pug on a strict diet, watch the extra treats, and make sure he is getting exercise. They may be an indoor dog, but they still need to get out and play in the backyard once a day!
