5 Odd Dog Behaviors Explained. You’ve Probably Wondered About These!

| March 29, 2014

bulldog play bowMost of a dog’s odd behavior is a genetic predisposition from their days as wild, untamed dogs that fended for themselves and had no human to answer to. From killing their stuffed animals to feeling the rush of wind on their face, owners are constantly amazed and amused by their furry four legged companions. Listed below are five peculiar habits that have their roots based deep within their DNA.

Teeth Shake

Ever wonder why a dog picks up a toy and shakes it furiously from side to side? Back in the days before domestication a wild dog would take its prey into his mouth and shake vigorously until the neck of his victim broke. Today the dog does it to a stuffed animal with much different results. Humans find this cute and endearing.

Food Shift

Some dogs will take their food out of the dish in one room and carry it into another room to eat it. This again goes back to the days when dogs had to fend for themselves. Lower members of the pack had to wait in line to get a turn to eat. Once they had their piece a dog would go to another area to eat, away from more dominant figures who may want to steal their food.

Wind Blown

Other than wanting that windblown look, a dog can pick up on a lot of smells as they whiz across town. Each neighborhood, city section, part of the state has a different smell and they are all fascinating to a dog that thrives on sniffing everything.

Play bow

Paws close together, head down, butt up a dog is ready to play. This stance is an open invitation to another dog saying “Wanna have some fun? Wanna? Wanna?” A dog in this position will also have their mouth situated in a sort of slack doggy smile, another indicator to a potential playmate that this is a friendly invitation and not to be wary.

Hiding treats

Instead of eating treats and bones, some dogs will bury them in the backyard, or in couch cushions. This goes back to when dogs had to find their own food. When it was plentiful, it was good but smart dogs hid some bones away for when the food was not so ample. Modern day dogs may not realize why they do this, but it’s always good to have a stash hidden somewhere.\
