8 Ways Your Dog Sets The Standard For A Healthy Relationship

| September 16, 2015

They say that dogs are man’s best friend, but have you ever thought about how they exemplify how you should be treated in your romantic relationships, as well? We love dogs because of how much they enhance our lives, and as it turns out, some of their best traits are ones that we people look for in a life partner. Here are eight canine qualities that also help humans build happy, healthy relationships.

1. Trustworthiness

The foundation of all relationships! Dogs depend on us for basic life necessities, but like humans, also share the need for emotional stability. Like our four-legged friends, we people need to know that our partners will always be there to take care of us.

2. Honesty

…it’s not the best policy for nothin.’ Whether asking your other half how much their new gadget cost or who ate the couch, just look into their eyes; you may not like the answer, but at least you’ll know the truth.

3. Loyalty

Even social butterflies (of both the two- and four-legged kind) save the most love for the ones they come home to! They may be eager to meet and play with others, but at the end of the day, there’s no one they’d rather be with than their one and only.

4. Forgiveness

Our canine companions teach us the best lessons in forgiveness. On one hand, they forgive us every time we leave them at home, because when we walk back through the door, it’s a joyous, tail-waggin’ reunion. On the other hand, they teach us how to forgive others; no matter how many pairs of shoes, pieces of furniture, or pairs of underwear your pooch destroys, you will always love him. To dogs, and in healthy relationships, grudges are non-existent.

This amazing trait is unique to dogs within the animal kingdom, and is a key component of human relationships. Dogs and loved ones are in tune with our emotions and refuse to pass judgement. All they know is that when we’re down, they want to make us feel better.

6. Protectiveness

Whether physically or emotionally, we need to feel safe with the ones we’re with. Your pooch may not be a  guard dog, but if it ever came down to it, he’d probably risk his life to save yours; and so would your significant other. Likewise, emotionally you should feel like your heart is being treated with utmost care, and not just tossed around like an old tennis ball.

7. Contentment

It’s simple, but true: whether you’re on an outdoor adventure or just lounging around  at home, you probably don’t feel complete unless your pup or partner is right beside you.

8. Longevity

You can never spend too much time with the one you love, and it’s a pretty safe bet that they feel the same about you, too. There will never be too many silly jokes, cozy snuggles, or joyful kisses, no matter how many years pass. If you’re a skeptic, dogs prove that unconditional love is possible; and if you haven’t found it, I promise, it’s out there.
