One of my male pit bulls also has it and our vet gave him medication to take and it’s called apoquel and it’s a non steroid so it’s not going to kill the kidneys or anything

My dogs have also suffered dermatitis due to the drought in California and the huge amount of fleas this year. I did a lot of research and decided to try a mixture of organic apple cider vinegar and water (5 parts water, 1 part vinegar). I sprayed them from head to toe (avoiding their faces of course) and massaged it into their coats. My minpin was the worst of all. He was constantly chewing on his fur and leaving bald, mean looking sores. Since I have started using my homemade spray, it has made a great difference. The sores have healed over and all my dogs coats are shiny. They don’t scratch as much and other than the vinegar smell, which goes away almost immediately, they seem to be well on the road to recovery. Give it a try and let me know if it works for you. Vinegar also repels fleas so I haven’t had to use any flea treatments either. I personally hate chemicals and now use this mixture as my go to cleaning product around the house as it also helps kill germs.

Have u tried a grain free diet. Many dogs are allergic to this, I feed my American bulldog wainwrights as he is prone to skin issues. I live in the UK so u maybe able to get something similar in U.S. My vet says that a good quality diet is a must for dogs with allergies.
Hope this helps

As Sandereina stated, apple cider and water mix works very well but you may want to start with a higher ratio of apple cider, say at 50/50 unless their are open sores. This has worked on my Westies & many of my friends’ dogs and I agree that it helps repel fleas as well as ticks that are making their way to NE OH. What is also very important is to use an organic low or no grain high protein dog food, a daily no odor garlic pill & colorful steamed vegie. Good Luck

My dogs suffered with dermatitis for four years, had all kinds of tests and were prescribed several different meds, as well as medicated shampoos, sprays and lotions, special foods, etc., to no avail. Finally, two years ago, I started giving them fish oil capsules that I purchased from 1 800 Petmeds.com. Within a month, all of their hair was growing back, no sores or flaky skin, and no itching. Two years later, they have never had another breakout.

Hi i have a cavalier king charles spaniel who has had terrible dermatitis and was put onto prednisone which was nasty for him. I changed vets and with his support went the natural way. We put him onto cider vinegar and honey [honegar] onto his food. Also colloidal silver which went both onto his food and the affected area. I also got help from a naturpath who diagnosed his allergies and made a tonic just for him. We make our own food of boiling chicken till cooked, de bone then put meat back into pot add vegetables and then thicken with rice. Our boy now looks good, he has fur again. He will always have dermatitis but we can manage it.. The silver and vinegar are both natural antibiotices, dermatitis has to work out from the gut to out side the body so they look worse before improving. We now have a healthy happy 5 1/2 yr old, know most of his allergies, and it nice to see him playing with his sister and the cat. Hope this can help you, out boy is proof that it works LIZ

I have a lab mix that had the same problem. Tried the drugs, didn’t work. Went to a good dog food, grain free. Didn’t work. Shampooed her with a specialty shampoo. Didn’t work. Started giving her an oatmeal bath once a week: Mixed up 2 parts oatmeal and 1 part baking soda with water until you get the consistency of … well… oatmeal, then crawl into a lukewarm bathtub with your dog and spread it on her coat. Rub it in, and then just have a spa time for about ten minutes. (It needs to sit on her skin for that long.) Rinse off and dry like normal.
We also added a teaspoon of coconut oil to her food once a day.
Her skin has completely cleared up and her coat is thick.
Every year around late Spring, she starts having the problem again, so we go through our spa routine and it heals right up.Attachments:
