Kara Freyja

A bit of back story: I am originally from Romania (for those of you who don’t know it’s a small country in Eastern Europe) and about 12 years ago I decided to move and live in England.
After living in England for about 10 years, moving and travelling all over the place, I’ve moved to B.C. Canada. I work from home as a support technician and sometimes can be in front of the PC for way too many hours (sometimes for no reason I admit, just because I get lost in the world wide web).

This is my first Dobermann… I used to take care of one over 10 years ago and fell in love with the breed… When I first met Lex in England 12 years ago I was a bit apprehensive having the typical misinformed opinion about Dobies: They can’t be family dogs, they’re aggressive, they drool (hey I had no clue about dobies at the time – all I knew was that they’re big and supposed to look scary). So when I moved in with Lex and he immediately bonded with me, you could say I was a bit confused… Here he was, the big bad ass doberman I was supposed to be so scared of, and all he did all day was follow me around the house (Yes, even when I went to the washroom – used to sit outside the door and wait for me to come out), and all he wanted was hugs and attention. Things went bitter between me and his owner and I had to move out, never to see him again (I often wonder if he’s still around, but I doubt it…)

Then last year around August my life became a bit more stable (I’ve been moving and traveling for the past 10 years quite a bit…) So now that I’m in Canada and I’ve decided to stay, I thought I could commit myself to having a dog.

So after remembering the good old times with Lex and tons of research I decided I’ll have Doberman. This being the first dog I’ve had in years I went the breeders way… I know some of you might give me the bad looks and speeches:@ there’s sooo many dogs in shelters that need adoption, etc, etc – you’re probably right, but being inexperienced I thought having a puppy from a breeder where I could meet the mum and dad was the easy route.

Boy, was I wrong… Kara is only 10 months today, but by the time she was 6 months she was in and out of the vets more than she was out running in the park… First there was bad tummies with runs and everything… Then there was a big tumor on her back that needed operating. Then she ripped the stitches and having made this huge gash on her back needed to be restiched… then there was Panosteitis (that’s shifting lameness of the limbs or growing pains), then there was a tumor above her eye that needed to be removed… My poor pup was starting to look like PupKenstein with so many scars.

Well, now that she’s turned 10 months she’s a lot better: hair has grown back to where all the scars were (still have a few bold patches here and there but they’e really small and you can’t really tell), she’s doing great at obedience and wherever we go to the park or coffee shop, I can’t get a break without telling me what a beautiful pup I have and what a good job I’ve done with obedience. (I tend to disagree as she’s still your typical teenage dobie and won’t do everything I say, but she’s getting better.

I think I might have goten off track here and missed the point – I’m supposed to tell you why my kara should be dobie of the day: Well, for starters, she’s been through quite a bit in her short little life so far, she’s very polite when she meets new dogs at the park (lies down and waits for them to come closer), she’s still your typical bouncy pup (maybe too bouncy sometimes, but I’m hoping she’ll calm down with age – one can hope, right? 🙂 ) but she’ll calm down immediately when she’s around my friend’s 1 year old daughter that’s just learning to walk… She takes me away from the PC and walking or bike riding and most of all she knows when she needs to leave me alone with work…(just sleeps under my desk until I get up and we go out)
