My Yorkie's Constant Snorting is starting to Worry Me!

First off let me say your baby is just darling! If she has been checked out by your vet and is up-to-date on all her shots then I wouldn’t worry about it too much. My Yorkies do this and it always seems to be at times I think when they are emotional. I am especially bonded with my first Yorkie who is now 13 years old. When he is happy to see me or excited he will act like he is kind of like sneezing but it is what you are talking about. It is like a snort. There is nothing wrong with him at all. It just seems to be a way for him to show his emotions. Enjoy your precious little girl!

Little dogs are prone to sensitive trachea’s or even collapsing trachea problems. Tell your vet you are concerned your dogs trachea might be collapsing when this happens. It’s kind of unusual that it doesn’t happen when the dog is excited at the vet’s. That’s usually when it happens. So, maybe it is an attention getting device. Try tilting your doggies nose up and holding it there, or gently stroking down the sides of the throat when it happens. If he is truly not getting enough air his tongue will turn dark purple or even blue or a pale grey.

I have 3 Chihuahuas and they all do this, it’s tracheal collapse which is common in toy breeds. They do it usually when they get over excited or just playing or just for no reason.I have brought this up with my vet and he said the best thing is to NOT medicate because the meds they give for this has side effects and this is common for toy breeds. He also owns a Chihuahua and says she does this 2 or 3 times a day and he does not give medications to his own dog for this.

My Husband & I also have an 7 yr. old Yorkie. When he starts barking to get our attention & we tell him to stop, he will than start starts snorting instead. Bandit also does the snorting when he when he knows we are about to give him a treat or let him outside to do his business. We asked our vet about it & he told us that most little dogs will do this if they want attention or get excited. Bandit has also been checked by the vet & he found nothing wrong. I would not worry about it unless it gets really bad cause than I would get your little Sweetheart checked out just to be safe.

Are you talking about a reverse sneeze? My yorkie snorts toon kinda sounds like a noise a bull dog would make but he does not have the smoosh face. I too wonder what it is. Mine also makes a clearing if the reader throat like a hacking noise at least once a day.
