10 Christmas Presents Your Dog Won’t Tell You He NEEDS

| June 11, 2020

What does your dog want for Christmas? A $200 dog bed, that $100 life-sized teddy bear he can shred, or maybe that $20 bag of premium dog treats? While your dog is sure to love any of these presents, here are some great gift ideas for your furry friend (or a friend’s) that he probably won’t think to ask Santa for.

#1 – Vet Check-up

Your dog should have a yearly vet check-up to make sure everything is going well. Although your dog may not think so, it’s a great holiday gift AND if you do it every year, it makes it easy to remember when your dog is supposed to go to the vet.

#2 – Supplements

With New Year’s just around the corner, we all start thinking about our health a bit more. Now’s a great time to start your dog on those supplements you always say you are going to get. Talk to your vet about which ones are right for your dog and give your dog a healthy future this holiday season.

#3 – Training

Nothing is better than starting your New Year off with some new training! Most dogs actually love to work and you don’t have to take a “boring” obedience class. Why not try tricks, rally, freestyle or agility class? All of these will build your bond and are very fun for both dog and owner. Go to CCPDT.org to find a trainer near you.

#4 – Toothbrush Set

Did you know brushing your dog’s teeth can add YEARS to his life? This year, put a new toothbrush set in your dog’s stocking. Not only will it keep them healthier, but it will also get rid of that bad doggy breath. Win-win!

#5 – Grooming

Like teeth brushing, grooming can keep your dog healthier. It is also not something most dogs enjoy, BUT it’s important. It’s a good way to notice things like skin issues or lumps and prevent mats. Get your dog a grooming appointment this Holiday season, or buy a spa package for a DIY-groom.

#6 – Microchip

Being able to get home should she become lost is the best Christmas present ever. Though no one likes a shot, a microchip is a one-time deal and is priceless, really.

#7 – Nail Clippers

Another health concern, keeping those nails short is important. If you are using dull or old clippers, you could cause discomfort or pain to your dog. Tuck a new pair of clippers in his stocking. He may not thank you, but your furniture sure will be.

#8 – Dental Check-up

Like the vet visit, your dog should be getting dental check-ups. Take him to make sure all his teeth are good and no infections are present. An infection in the mouth can go to the brain and be fatal. Make this another Holiday tradition.

#9 – Vaccines

These are particularly important if you are planning on leaving your dog this holiday season at a doggy daycare or boarding facility. In fact, the facility should require them in order for your dog to stay. Even if you are not leaving him anywhere, having him up-to-date is a good way to keep him healthy when he is playing at the dog park or just walking through a pet store.

#10 – Pet Insurance

One of the best presents you can give your dog and yourself is peace of mind. Pet insurance covers you for those big expenses so you never have to choose between paying the rent and giving your dog the care he needs in an emergency.
