Your puppy is a baby exploring the world. Everything goes in a baby’s mouth – and your puppy is no different. He/she is simply learning about the world. Further, your puppy is probably losing its baby teeth, so chewing feels GOOD! Your puppy is not a monster – but being a normal puppy – especially for a lab.
Put up anything that you do not want chewed first of all – remove the temptation – especially electrical cords. You have a “baby” so you have to baby proof your house. Then put down the things you want the puppy to chew on – and plenty of those!
When you can’t watch your puppy, try crating in it in a large crate where he/she has enough room to move around and stretch out. Introduce the crate slowly, so the puppy will find it an enjoyable place to be – feed them in there, put its favorite toys in there, and start with putting your puppy in there for only a few minutes (while you are in the room) and work up to longer times.
Also, make sure that your puppy is getting plenty of exercise and play time. If some of the chewing is from boredom, then getting all that energy out will redirect that need to chew. As your puppy grows, this becomes more important – plenty of exercise will keep a dog from finding things “to do” and will avoid behavior problems!
Hope this helps! Remember, this is just a stage and before you know it – he/she will be a grown dog! Enjoy the puppy days! 🙂
