The friendship between people and their dogs is always an incredible thing to witness, but even more so when that friendship also consists of years of hard work together.

Sgt. Canvas is the combat dog veteran who stood loyally by her human Cpl. Moseley’s side throughout multiple tours in Afghanistan. Able to detect the scents of up to 70 kinds of bombs and other explosives, Moseley’s bravery served an important purpose to her team.

Moseley recalls that having Canvas there with him made being away from his home that much easier to bear.

“It was like being with family,” He recalls of their time together overseas.

After retiring to a quieter life with her favorite human, things calmed down for Canvas. Then, the 9 year-old dog developed extreme spinal issues resulting in severe pain. Moseley made the difficult decision to put the brave girl to sleep…but not before giving her a final goodbye that will bring tears to your eyes.

Watch in the emotional video below as Moseley carries his beloved service animal in his arms while community members rally around them to honor the pair and say a farewell and ‘thank you’ to sweet Canvas.

So incredibly moving. It is so impossibly difficult to imagine saying goodbye to our fur babies, especially when they’ve gone through so much with us, but it must be comforting for them to know just how much they are loved. What an amazing tribute to a truly amazing dog. Rest easy, sweet girl.
