A Britney Spaniel Named Dexter has gained a large following due to his impressive resilience! Just six years ago he was involved in a freak accident that damaged his two front limbs, but he has since conquered his life and learned an incredible skill.
Dexter’s family adopted him in 2015 and happily welcomed the adorable pup into their home. Just as he was becoming the member of their family they always dreamed of, something unimaginable happened that almost took him away.
Dexter accidentally escaped from the family yard and ran toward the street in pursuit of an interesting smell. The scent so entranced him that he ran into the road alongside a moving van, only to be struck by the large vehicle within moments.
From the moment Dexter was hit by the vehicle, it was clear that he was badly injured. His parents raced him to the nearest vet for intensive care, where the best way to save him was to remove one of his front legs. His other front leg had to be pinned at the elbow, causing his parents to wonder if he would ever live a full life again.
It was a long road to recovery for Dexter, but his will to succeed was stronger than his struggles. He always remained positive, and one day he made a move that shocked everyone around him.
One morning Dexter was left in the front yard while his mom went inside to make a cup of coffee. She returned to find that Dexter had walked on his own up the outdoor stairs, but she had no idea how he could have done that. That’s when she carried him back into the yard and pressed record to see what he would do next.
It was then that Dexter stood upright on his back legs and walked up the stairs by himself. His fur mom couldn’t believe what she was seeing, and she was terrified that he would hurt himself. Little did she know, this would soon become a regular occurrence for Dexter.
“I caught him walking upright up the front stairs … I was shocked and scared he would hurt himself again. I remember feeling both amazement and apprehension over this determined dog.” – Dexter’s fur mom
It has now been six years since the life-altering accident for Dexter, and he has absolutely mastered his walking skills. Dexter is now a canine celebrity on both Instagram and TikTok and has hundreds of thousands of admiring fans!
Dexter is known around the world now, but he is especially appreciated in his hometown of Ouray. His daily walks are more like parades, as dozens of people stop at the chance to befriend the talented pup.
Dexter now attends the occasional Ouray event, where he always has a line of people waiting to meet him. We are so proud of Dexter and everything he has achieved, and we have no doubt he will go on to inspire so many more!
