Some dogs refuse to acknowledge their massive size—especially regarding snuggle time. While a tiny Chihuahua fits neatly in your lap, it’s a different story when a 100-pound pup tries to do the same. Many large breeds are gentle giants who crave affection and see no reason why their weight should stop them from curling up on you. Whether they’re leaning their entire body against you, sprawling across the couch, or draping themselves over your legs, these oversized snugglers prove that when it comes to love, size doesn’t matter.

Great Dane

Great Danes are often called “the world’s biggest lapdogs” for a reason. Despite standing as tall as a small horse, these gentle giants love curling up on their humans like they weigh nothing. Their affectionate nature makes them want to be as close as possible, even if that means draping their long legs across you while attempting to fit into a space that’s clearly too small. A Great Dane doesn’t care that they take up the entire couch—they’ll happily plop down right on top of you for maximum cuddle efficiency.

Saint Bernard

If you’ve ever wanted a 150-pound teddy bear, a Saint Bernard is the dog for you. These massive dogs are famous for their loving, patient personalities and have zero personal space concept. Whether they’re leaning their entire body against you or sneaking their way onto your lap like an oversized weighted blanket, a Saint Bernard will make sure you never feel lonely (or light). Their love is strong, their cuddles are heavy, and their slobbery kisses are unavoidable.

Newfoundland

Newfoundlands are known as “nanny dogs” for their gentle and affectionate temperament, but they also tend to forget just how large they are. These fluffy giants are natural snugglers, often climbing onto couches (or people) with the grace of a baby elephant. Whether they’re draped across your lap or flopping onto your feet like a living, breathing rug, a Newfoundland’s idea of “personal space” is whatever space you’re in—because they need to be right there with you.

Bernese Mountain Dog

Bernese Mountain Dogs may have a working breed background, but that doesn’t stop them from thinking they’re lapdogs. Their friendly, affectionate personalities make them crave human attention, and they’ll gladly snuggle up with you any chance they get. They might try to curl up on your lap like a much smaller dog, or they’ll just settle for leaning their entire body weight against you until you eventually collapse under their love. A Bernese Mountain Dog is never far away when snuggles are involved.

Mastiff

Shutterstock

Mastiffs are enormous, but try telling them that. These gentle giants believe they were made for cuddling and have no problem sitting directly on you to prove it. With their affectionate nature and deep attachment to their humans, Mastiffs will happily sprawl across your lap, press their heads against your chest, or lean on you with all their weight. If you own a Mastiff, just accept that personal space is a concept they will never understand.

Irish Wolfhound

The Irish Wolfhound may be one of the tallest dog breeds in the world, but in their minds, they’re tiny snuggle buddies. These lanky, lovable dogs have a heart as big as their size, and they will absolutely try to fit into your lap—even if it means awkwardly folding themselves into an uncomfortable position. Irish Wolfhounds love to be close to their humans, and they’ll drape their long legs across you or curl up beside you with no awareness of how much space they’re taking up.

Leonberger

Leonbergers are enormous, fluffy, and full of love—so naturally, they think they belong on your lap. These affectionate giants are known for their goofy, people-loving personalities, and they’ll happily stretch out across you like a giant, warm blanket. Whether they’re climbing onto the couch, leaning against you with all their weight, or simply using you as a human pillow, a Leonberger is guaranteed to bring maximum snuggle energy (and maybe a little drool) to your life.

Alaskan Malamute

Alaskan Malamutes are strong, powerful working dogs, but deep down, they’re also giant, affectionate snugglers. These fluffy giants have a deep bond with their humans, and they love nothing more than curling up next to (or on top of) the people they love. They might not fit on your lap, but that won’t stop them from trying or pressing their thick fur against you like a cozy living heater. When a Malamute wants snuggles, you have no choice but to accept.

Pyrenean Mountain Dog (Great Pyrenees)

The Great Pyrenees is an independent, protective breed, but don’t let their serious nature fool you—they are absolute cuddle monsters when they want to be. These big, fluffy dogs love to be close to their people, and they’ll happily climb onto your lap or lean into you for snuggles. Their thick coats make them extra warm, and they seem to think sharing that warmth with you is necessary. If you own a Great Pyrenees, expect to be smothered in love (and fur).

The Lap Is a State of Mind, Not a Size Limit

These giant cuddle monsters may not fit in your lap, but that won’t stop them from trying. When a massive dog wants snuggles, resistance is futile—you’ll be covered in fur, pinned under love, and maybe lose circulation in your legs. But is there anything better than being squished by a dog who adores you? They don’t care about their size or your personal space—just that being as close as possible is the best place. So, get comfy because your oversized lap dog isn’t going anywhere!
