A shocking case of animal abandonment has surfaced in Utah, where two helpless dogs were found locked in a cage in the middle of the desert—left with no food, no water, and no way to escape.
The two dogs, both male Landseers, were discovered on the morning of February 23 by two hikers near Quail Lake, off Route 318. Realizing the urgent and cruel nature of the situation, the hikers quickly alerted authorities.
“We have minimal information on who left them. No collars or microchips,” Hurricane Animal Shelter stated in a social media post, hoping for leads in identifying the person responsible.
Despite the extreme conditions, the dogs were found in surprisingly good health. However, animal advocates are outraged by the deliberate cruelty of the act, emphasizing that this was not just neglect—but a clear attempt to abandon them to die.
“Everybody needs to stop thinking that animals are disposable. They’re not disposable,” said Hurricane resident Andrea Kaz in an interview with Fox 13 Salt Lake City.

An Unthinkable Act of Neglect
Kaz expressed her heartbreak over the discovery, condemning the individual responsible for intentionally leaving the dogs trapped in the desert sun.
“In a case like this, where they’re found in a cage, they left them to die,” Kaz said. “This wasn’t, ‘Hey, maybe you can fend on your own.’ It’s, ‘I’m leaving you here, and I’m leaving you here in the sun, crated, to die.’”
While local authorities are investigating this as a potential case of animal cruelty, no suspects have been identified so far. The Hurricane Animal Shelter is asking the public for any information that might help bring justice for these abandoned dogs.

The Bigger Picture: A Nationwide Crisis
Animal abandonment is an ongoing issue across the country, as shelters continue to struggle with overpopulation and neglect cases.
Kaz believes the only long-term solution is a commitment to responsible pet ownership, including spaying, neutering, and adopting.
“If every single person in the country were to adopt eight animals, we could clear the shelters,” Kaz said. “But within weeks, because of the lack of spay and neuter and people not being responsible pet owners, the shelters would be full again.”
She continued, emphasizing that this is not a one-time issue but part of a much bigger problem that requires community involvement and awareness.

A Pattern of Abandonment Cases
Sadly, this is not an isolated incident. Just months earlier, in November 2024, two dogs were found abandoned on a road in Jupiter Farms, Florida—left behind with only a note begging for help.
The message read:
“Please help them. I am so sorry but ran out of time and options.”
Unlike the Utah case, those dogs—later named Mella and Rocky—were left with their medical records and a note stating that they were ‘happy and friendly’. Their owner, while unable to care for them, at least tried to ensure they were found safely.
But the two Utah dogs had no such chance. Whoever left them in the desert intended for them to suffer.
